first time PC builder having trouble w/ boot-up

i'm building this computer for a friend. i'm a noob but i've followed directions. as far as i know, everything is plugged in fine. the hardware is all pretty much used but the case is new. all of the jumpers are in the right positions (according to the mobo's manual), the standby LED is on (yellow light as opposed to green/red), and wondering if there is something wrong with the power switch? any ideas? building it for a lady-friend, can't disappoint :)
 
does anybody have an idea? i'm kinda desperate. could it be a shot PSU? it's generic 350w, came with the case (Avus from TD..uh oh...lol)
 
Okay, easy way to test your power switch functionality is to take flat had screw driver and just shortly
touch at the same time 2pins on the mobo to where power switch was connected.
But be very carefully not to short with any other pins. You may fry your mobo or at least driver for led's.
Also, have only minimum components powered: mobo and cpu if needed.
Unplug all other pci cards you may have. Leave only your video card.
Pull memory out (if it works, mobo will beep) and make sure CPU is seated properly.
If you still have no power-up, try different power supply.

I've just realized that you have power; your stand-by led is ON. So
It could definitely be something else? Do you get any beeps or does CPU fan spin when you press power switch?
 
What are stats on the comp?

If its an intel motherboard and it happens to be asus.. samething happened to me. Try taking the heatsink off the processor and booting. If this works, its a faulty motherboard, and if it doesnt.. well, then it could be the power supply not having enough juice to start it, however this is highly unlikely.
 
It's an Abit mobo with an AMD Athlon XP 1400. the case is Avus.

when i turn the power switch on from the back, one of the fans twitches and spins for a second. is it possible i got shafted on a PSU?
 
update: my friend and i were trying to tweak it, and we think that it might be a faulty power connector? it'd be a shame to have to take everything out and get a whole new case...then again, that might be what i get for buying from TD :(
 
if the fan spins for like .1 seconds, rip out anything except the mobo, psu and the fans. Then try to run it.
 
When you put in the motherboard did u make sure to use the little gold risers? Maybe your motherboard is grounding out.....?
 
removed everything, made sure it wasn't grounding out.. didn't work. even removed RAM. deductive skills point me towards: 1) fried mobo, 2) fried CPU, 3) fried power switch. :mad: any ideas?
 
well, do you have another socket A cpu lying around?

Try it.

Do you have another PSU?

Try it.

If those don't work, RMA the board :(.
 
Hey, I have a feeling it's the mobo. When I put together my PC a couple of months ago it was my motherboard that was faulty - and it wouldn't boot up.

I would try putting all your parts into another mobo and seeing if it works.

the back, uh what. Make sure the red switch is set right and make surethe PSU is on. then try the switch on the front of the case?!

maybe you connected the power switch connector to the mobo wrong, play w/it till u get something.
 
Is the mobo in contact with the case any way? (IE- mobo is touching one of the sides)

nope, used those riser things. no other CPUs or PSUs laying around, at least none that are working. the main power switch from the back, when turned on, creates fans spinning for a second. the power switch on the front doesn't do anything, and the yellow standby LED is still on. the mobo is old, i doubt abit would let me RMA it, i bought it used so i don't have any documentation. ideas?
