First Time Overclocker Some Advice and Concerns

First time overclocker here, and I think it's funny because of my hardware and the reason I purchased it a few years ago. I had the intentions of overclocking, and tried it but had no luck.

I'm following http://forums.legitreviews.com/about10789.html guide for a basis of overclocking but I'm concerned on temperatures and can't seem to get it stable.

My hardware:

Intel C2Q QX6850 cooled with Xigmatek S1283
Asus P5Q Pro
G Skill DDR2 1000

I got my system to run at least 5 passes of maximum with Intel burn test. With 377x9 = 3.4ghz.

When running intel Burn test my top temps were like 91 deg celcius. THis was with stock vCore set to auto, I think it was like 1.375 or something like that. I tried taking it up to 3.6 which I could that CPU could easily do, but I had to take vCore to 1.4 before it would even test and pass any tests. I got 3 passes on intel burn test before I quit it because I was too nervous of the temps, it was around 94 deg C. Is this too hot? I cleaned out all the dust, and the system core temps are like 38-40C when idle.

Any advice on what I may be doing wrong?
 
Maybe your heatsink is not set correctly, or your thermal paste was not applied correctly?

I would never run a processor up to 90 C, in fact, I would be hesitant to even pass 60 C. You may need to improve your cooling solution.
 
My idle temps seem to be right where they need to be. It doesn't get nearly that hot when playing games or even encoding video.

Intel Burn Test really gets it up there.
 
Either the cooler just isn't up to the task (possible but doubtful) or you need to up the fan speed on it. What kind of fan are you using?
 
That's a good cooler, so that shouldn't be the issue (I have the same one on my Q6600). TJ MAX on the chip is 100C I believe, so that's pushing it.

Do you have a retention bracket on the heatsink? What kind of paste did you use? How are your fans set up on the heatsink? The chip might not be making full contact with the heat sink, trapping heat under there.
 
Many people, when installing their heatsinks and aftermarket thermal paste, will use waaaaaaaaay too much paste. It is possible that you gooped too much on that can cause heat to not transfer to the heatsink. The idea of thermal paste is NOT to tranfer heat, but the fill in the very very tiny gaps in between the cpu heatsink and the heatsink/fan.
 
Okay! Confirmed, I took it apart, and I seriously effed this thing up with loads of thermal grease. I regreased it with just a simple dot in the middle.

Also I changed my OC to be 10x333Mhz and set my vCore to 1.325. Look at my CoreTemp Log that I made a snapshot of. Something tells me Core0 and Core1 should mirror similar temps as Core2 and Core3. Did I once again apply thermal paste incorrectly on this CPU since it's quad core?

So IntelBurnTest gets my CPU about 20 degrees hotter than OCCT does.

After regreasing it again, my load temps with OCCT with large data set are about 60C max.

Ran this overnight and was 9 hours stable @ 3.4Ghz 1.35vcore.

I tried dialing it up to 3.6GHz (327x11, 360x10, 400x9), I can't get it to run stable. IS this the speed where you would need to start bumping up the NB FSB and some other tweaks? I had my Vcore up to 1.45, which I didn't think was right since I was stable @ 1.35 for 3.4. The clock I want to achieve is 3.6.

Why does IntelBurnTest get my CPU temps so high compared to the other tests?
 
It looks like you had way too much grease on their. IntelBurnTest is intended to do that.

Temps should also drop a bit over time as the heat will set in the grease
 
Thanks for the info. I was trying to dial out my system a bit more.

3.39Ghz @ 1.35v (9x375) got me 12 hours Prime95 stable and 9 hours OCCT stable.

If I bump the speed to 3.52 (390x9 or 350x10) the system just bombs out, I tried it even dialing the vcore up to 1.42, for some reason the system just isn't wanting to work. I should be able to get this thing @ 3.6 which is where I want to be. Do you know what I'll need to do?
 
I'm going to thread bump this, as I'm recently been trying to OC my CPU a bit more with Skyrim and BF3 in my system.

Same specs as my OP but with an ATI 5770 and Corsair HX520 PSU. Little more details for you. Here's a screenshot of my CPU-z and Coretemp readings:

I want to get it around hte 3.6-3.7 range, but unsure if my chip is up to the task.

BIOS Settings so far:
DRAM Voltage set to 2.1v (to spec)
5-5-5-15 timing set
Disabled C1E
Disabled CPU Spread Spectrum
Disabed SpeedStep

I thought it would be easy to just use it @ 360mhz x10 multiplier.
