so, i read the sticky on the top about OCing and i learned a lot from it.. so to start off, i saw how fast i could get my ram..

btw, here are some specs..
asus a8n sli premium
amd 3200+ venice
bfg 7800gtx
corsair 2x512 3200
watercooled (storm, maze4 gpu, maze4 chipset, d5 pump, two 180 rads)

i was reading step 1 on trying to see how fast i could get my memory to go and it showed an example of like 225-227mhz.. but when i tried mine, it went up to a pathetic 212mhz.. is there something wrong with my ram? or is it normal? i brought my cpu multiplier down to 8x with htt down to 4x.. i used memtest86 to see when my ram would crash.. and well, it was safe at 212..


i will be trying to OC my processor now reading the guidelines on step 2.. can anyone let me know what to expect??
 
try loosening the timings on the ram. with an a64 getting much of an oc out of the ram is close to worthless...if you can manage 210mhz or so at 2-2-2-5, stay there. the cpu speed makes a MUCH larger impact on overall performance. So now have at it, and use dividers to keep the ram under 212, and you will be set! Its also possible that the cpu's memory controller cant handle high speeds, I know my mem controller cant handle over 240mhz or so, and I have ram thats garuanteed to do 275mhz. Get crackin on that cpu, and let us know! (dont go over 1.6v on the cpu :p )
 
i dont know how to change the timing on the ram as of yet, but my timing reads as following on cpuz.. 212.0 mhz, cpu/8, 2.5, 3, 3, 8, 11, 16.. is it worth changing the timing to raise the freq of the ram? or should i change the ratio? as for the voltage, i am scared to fry any of my components and would like some tips on how to go about this safely.. thanks!
 
well, then you dont exactly have great ram to start with, OR its just defaulting to lower speeds. did you get corsair value select? If so, then its supposed to be like that...and you aren't going to get much more out of the memory. You will need a little bump in the juice to get the most out that chip, I was just throwing 1.6 as a good point to stop at, beyond that theres a chance to hurt the chip, even on water. Still you shoudl get a decent oc out of a venice with default voltage. Just take it nice n slow, one step at a time :)

No idea what the IC on that is, but I dont think it's TCC* or UTT. In which case....you're overclocking could be might limited.
Loosen your timings in the BIOS to
TCL(CAS Latency) = 3
Trc = 3
Trp = 4
Tras = 10
And set the dram voltage at 2.8V, then start your overclocking again. Also drop your multi back to like, 5, you're HT link multiplier to 2.5, and raise your HTT(FSB) in 3MHz incremements before doing 5 loops of test #5 in Memtest.
 
sweet christ that ram sux. $150 for cas3 ram??? geez man, you got ripped...hardcore. the fact alone that you are running them at cas2.5 is good enough. All in all, you're doing well with 212 at cas 2.5, when its only rated for cas3 (lower is better with timings). Id suggest giving up on the ram overclocking, and focusing now on the cpu. This makes no sense...their value select ram is 2.5-3-3-8....why would they make cas3 xms ram...and charge MORE for it??? This is 100% confusing to me...see here
 
The settings for that ram are 3-3-3-8...but I don't know why you didnt get these instead....they're $27 cheaper and do 2-3-3-6 timings....mine are stable to about 245mhz. And see if the voltage to the ram is set at 2.75v....as that's what they want.
 
i changed the voltage to 2.75 and it did up it to 215 mhz.. i kept it at stock timing.. i will try playing with the timing tonite..

i have a question tho.. if my ram can only go up to 215, doesnt that mean i can only oc my fsb to 215? which will give me a WHOPPING 2.15 ghz out of a 3200+ venice? am i missing something? or is my ram THAT bad?

Nah, you gotta look at the dividers. In your BIOS, there'll be a setting saying something like "RAM Speed" or some such schnitz, and it will be set to 200Mhz(400Mhz if you use an Asus). Dropping this doesnt drop the ram speed to its value, but will decrease it based on a divider. Therefore, dropping the divider to 166Mhz while your "FSB" is at 200Mhz will result in 166Mhz ram speed. But, dropping the divider to 166Mhz while you run at 250Mhz FSB will result in a RAM speed of around 208Mhz. Kapeish?
