I am thinking about buying a decent sized lcd monitor. I have had my 17" sony crt forever, and I'd like to have a little more screen real estate. Here are my relevant computer specs:

Amd phenom II x2 550 BE which is OC'ed to 3.7ghz
4 GB ram
ati radeon hd 4870 oc'ed to 790 mhz gpu and memory @ 1090 mhz
windows vista 64 ultimate

I am thinking about purchasing this 22" asus lcd:

Is this type of monitor okay for gaming? Currently I play unreal tournament 3, far cry 2, and urban terror, but I just got a computer capable of playing these games, so I'll probably pick up more.

Basically, is the size of the monitor going to be a problem for me in any way?

Also, do these type of monitors have any type of delay associated with them? I am highly competitive at fps games online and I don't want my game to suffer noticeably.

Also, does this monitor look good in general?

Thanks so much!

All LCD monitors have some level of input lag, however it basically varies from model to model.

The 23.6" Asus VK246H have been tested to have an average input lag of 1.6ms (less than 1/8th of a frame). The VW246H is the same monitor, but it excludes the builtin webcam.

it shouldn't be a problem except perhaps FC2, you might need to lower some settings (guessing you're gaming at what? like 1152x864 or 1280x1024 currently?), but everything else should be fine (and its only 1680x1050, so not a huge jump)

input lag and whatnot shouldn't be an issue, yes it will be there, but it shouldn't kill your game performance, its more likely to be an issue with the resolution and games that aren't released yet (1680x1050 is easily handled by a 4870, although in 6 or 12 or maybe 18 months, this might not be as true, although the same thing would happen with your CRT, its inevitable)

Thanks jaguar and obobski. I think you've answered my questions sufficiently enough that I will go ahead and make the purchase. I don't mind bumping the settings down a bit if I need to. I can't even really tell that much difference anyway. If I have to I can always upgrade a bit in a year or so after I get some other things in order. I'm excited about having so much more room on my desktop!

Thanks

I made the switch from a 22" Mitsubishi 2070SB CRT a few months back to the LCD. Just got a cheap one to see how I would like it. Does everything I want it to, I no longer play fps games online competitively and haven't on the LCD, but have pubbed a little for fun and it wasn't that hard to get used to. The aspect ratio was probably the biggest issue, couldn't figure out how to force 4:3 with black bars on the side with an ati card, nvidias CP is so much easier. Mine is 2ms gtg as well, input lag doesn't seem bad.

It may take a little while to get used to, but I think you will be better off with the higher resolution and display size. People used to always accuse me of hacking years back saying there is no way you can see people that far, wasn't so hard with a 22" CRT @ 2048x1536.

The good thing is that monitor is pretty damn cheap, so even if you find out you don't like lcd's for your needs, you can sell it without losing too much. And if you do like them, you can always get another higher quality one, thinking about getting a 30" 25x16 now myself.

Thanks beaverman, I ordered it today, so I'll know pretty soon. I agree with what you said, it's pretty cheap so if I don't like it, it's not the end of the world. I'm curious if the lag will be a problem or not. I'm pretty sensitive to delays, but I didnt think about the possible advantage of seeing things "bigger" so to speak. I also wonder about the fact that on a smaller monitor my eyes barely have to move to target various areas on the screen and my peripheral vision is usually good enough to make a fast aim and take a pretty accurate shot. On a larger screen I'm thinking my peripheral vision may not be able to take it all in. I guess I'll find out!

Thanks
