Just wanted to say hello, I was a United Devices junkie back in the day and since the nice folks at the [H] helped me put together my new computer I figured it was time to start folding as promised. Running SMP and GPU2 on the main computer for now, going to try it tomorrow on the laptop (electricity is dirt cheap in Venezuela so why not?).

Quick question, is it normal that the CPU usage is usually around 25% occasionally jumping to no more than 40%? the 4th core in my CPU rarely gets used.

Welcome!

If your CPU is only at 25% it is only running on one core. (SMP is not installed properly)

If you post us the log we can help.

Welcome to the fold!

WELCOME shroud27, to the wide World of DCing (folding, WCG) Thanks for folding for the mighty [H]orde team 33 :D

I have to agree with brother Kendrak about reinstallng the WinSMP client and reconfiguring it. While I kinda' gave up sometime ago with the WinSMP folding client because, at the time, it was constantly EUEing. :( (ATM running some type of windose makes it less complicated to use the GPU2 client) I have been using the WCG clients. I have the CPU usage set at 75% in the advanced view preferences and when I go into task manager the task manager rocks between 3% and 78%.. I use both the 32 bit OS and 64 bit OS versions of the Win7 beta. (I'm kinda' a fanboi of Win7 :p)

I can't remember what my task manager showed when I was using the WinSMP client (I was using the Win64 OS on one quad, WinXP w/SP3 OS on one quad and LinSMP on a couple of E6600's). I do remember with both the WinSMP client and the WCG clients I use affinity, in the task manager, to lock the WCG clients to cores #0, #1, and #2 and the GPU2 client defaults to core #3 (for me anyway ;))

I'm sure another knowledgeable member can give you some more detailed info. That's one of the many nice things about the [H]orde forum, we've got some pretty sharp members (both male and female) concerning computers and DCing (folding, WCG, etc). :p Another nice thing is they're always more than happy to help you and If they don't know the answer themselves they'll certainly point you in the direction of getting your question answered. They'll help you without all the BS about thinking they know everything. On another forum, I won't dime on (not OCF or XS because IMO they're a great forums), when I asked a question they'd give me advice or instructions that sometimes solved my problems and sometimes left me in the ozone :p. They had the bad habit of dispensing their, not always correct, instruction/critiques, in a BS demeaning way that implied I had about as much technical abiility as an over ripe banana

DCing for the CURE

You can run the MPICH client on your notebook if you use a notebook cooler.
The client will slow down while you surf or work on apps, but continue to run.

Welcome to the [H]orde DC'n. :)

I'm pretty sure I followed the installation guide to the letter but then again it was 4am so who knows. Here's what task manager shows 80% of the time with some quick spikes to 30-40%.

Also woke up to the unpleasant surprise of a turned off computer so I'm not gonna use GPU2 until I figure out what happened.

Here's the log

<edit> I think my image broke the boards :S

You're running a 4454, which is not an SMP unit. That means that you did not set it up correctly. From your log file, I can tell that you did not use the -smp flag when you ran the client. Make a shortcut to the fah6.exe file, go into the file properties, and at the end of the target box add "-smp" without the quotation marks. Then run F@H from that shortcut. Providing you installed the MPI service correctly, that should get you started with a real SMP unit.

Doh, that was it, running at 100% now. Thanks!

<edit> Just had another reboot, it happened as GPU2 was finishing a unit apparently. My computer is 100% stable with prime95 and IBT, CPU temps never go higher than 54c and GPU tops out at 65c so don't know what is causing this...

Sigh.. now GPU2 is working fine and SMP is giving me trouble... I keep getting FILE IO errors.. first it was

[22:47:14]

Then I got another a few mins ago that just said FILE_IO_ERROR

Maybe try reducing the timing of your system memory in BIOS.
I've been running a single MPICH/SMP on my Q9550 and two 280s in my second box for months with no problems. Vista 64 bit.

Memory is at 5-5-5-12 since yesterday morning, a full run of memtest showed no problems :S

I'm using DEINOS though.. maybe I'll uninstall, delete everything and go with MPICH.

Yeah, give MPICH a shot. I don't know if that'll fix your problem, but it's worth trying.

How many sticks of memory do you have?

If you have four sticks, try just two and see what happens.

I have found that MemTest will sometimes not find any errors at all, but the SMP folding client will fail with IO errors. After dealing with this problem for a while, running memtest again will find significant memory errors.

P.S. Welcome!

I have a 2x 2GB kit which has served me well. MPICH seems to be working just fine, finished my first WU today. I did get a "Failed to delete work/wudata_01.sas" error but I suspect that may have something to do with Diskeeper 2009 being installed...

Now I can proudly say:

Thanks for the help! :D

I did get a "Failed to delete work/wudata_01.sas" error
I got plenty of those and it never affected anything, so I suspect you shouldn't have to worry about it. Glad to hear everything is working now :).
