This is my first time building a computer. I have a wierd friend that is in to computer building and has urged me to build my own computer.

Specs: ASUS "A7N8X-X" nForce2 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD
ATI RADEON 9600XT Video Card, 128MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP - RETAIL
AHANIX 300W Silent Power Supply, Model "ATX 300 Watt PSU" -RETAIL
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton", 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - OEM
Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM
Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD800BB, OEM drive
Logitech Premium Desktop USB/ PS/2 104keys Keyboard & Cordless Optical Mouse -
Samsung Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model SW-
Antec 80mm Green UV Case Fan, Model "77073"

The total cost is around $600. Is there any way that I can get a better computer for less money. I am interested in overclocking a lot of the hardware.

if ur gonna air overclock, perhaps get a better fan than what stock gives you. other than that choosing 2500 for the CPU will be good. for mobo's i have heard the NF7 is a good AMD 32bit board for OC.
 
the 2500 + is a good processor. crank up the fsb to 200 and you'll overclock to 3200+ speeds because the 2500 has the same multiplier as teh 3200 +
 
i would try finding an 9800 pro or a 9700...

great PC, but if you want to save some money, there is probably a person on H wiling to sell a computer like that.
 
Nunca, I would get a nicer Antec case with a 350w PSU, probably this one

Never skimp on the PSU... ;)

you need a heatsink too.. these two are highly reccomended, but ask around and see if they fit on that motherboard first..

and get a good psu.. enermax, fortron, sparkle, antec, pc power and cooling.. there are others.. just go to the power supplies section of the forum and see what they reccomend..or buy one that is over $50 and ugly.. plain grey and functional looking.. then you won't be getting a blinged up piece of crap..

other motherboards to look at are the

abit nf7s
dfi infinity

you could build a shuttle too, i built mine for about $600

and it will work great with either of the 2 cpus i listed above...
