Haven't built a PC in 5 years but finally decided to upgrade and put together the following last night:
SG01-B Evo Case
Ultra X2 550w PSU
GIGABYTE GA-965GM-S2
2GB Corsair DDR2 800 5-5-5-12
E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz
Rosewill RCX-Z2 (w/ Artic Silver 5)
Raid0 300GB (2 150GB Raptors)
Lite-On DVD Burner
Still need to get:
PCIe Video Card (waiting until DX10 cards available)
TV Tuner (waiting for the ATI 650)
Wireless adapter (usb stick)
Front panel 5.25 remote module (like an iMon or something)
External backup drive
Build went totally smoothly except for little problems I caused myself. Didn't mount the heatsink properly on the first try - Ok Ok, this was my first attempt with an LGA775 board. Got it mounted right and CPU temp dropped over 10C - doh.
The Gigabyte board has absolutely NO overclocking options - even within the Gigabyte overclocking software. Personally, I don't really mind that much but I'm sure some people here would like to know. Originally I decided to go with the Asus-P5B-VM, but RMAed it as the RAID support was only for 1internal/1external drive. I needed both my Raptors internal. Only setting the CTRL-1 allows you to do is set the memory timings. I changed them from auto to 5-5-5-12 - like other boards, it recognized the RAM as 5-5-5-18.
Question: The current cooler I have isn't so quiet. It is also right up against the 120mm exhaust fan of the PSU. Air is being pulled downward by the CPU cooler, while the PSU is sucking it upward. This can't be conducive to good air flow. Any suggestions for a cooler that blows air stright up? Or sideways? has to be under 78mm tall, and quiet.
The drives are a little noisy, but for 140mb/s read speed, I'll live with it.
