First Overclock - maybe a simple question:

I've been making a few changes here and there and currently am running stock settings. One thing is keeping me from keeping my rig overclocked, is the voltages. I left my voltage setting on Auto last time and it jumped up to 1.6! The OC was stable at 1.5 (setting set to OFF). So now I'm wondering if I need to set any other settings to OFF - know what I mean?

I'm going for a modest overclock on my Opeteron 144 chip (at 1.8 stock, gets up to 2.8 aggressively). I think I can get 2.5-2.6 on stock voltages and cooling. Just don't want to FRY anything!

I am not a fan of Auto anything especially voltages. Find via forums/google/search of your choice what the stock voltages are for your motherboard and chip and set them in the bios. Now you don't have to worry about the bios over volting anything. Make sure of course after you set everything to check it. I use Everest as it reads just about every temp sensor.

everest is a really good tool - thanks for the recommendation.

i had a hard time finding my stock voltages, can anyone give me a hand?

It appears that there are a few different versions of the Opteron 144 and the voltage is different on those. Do you happen to have the codes off of the top of the cpu? That will tell us what version of Opty you have and we can go from there.

Hmm, that I don't know - but I can check when I get home. I overclocked the machine last night (to 260 FSB, Multi: 9x, HT: 3x, Ram: DDR166) and locked chip voltage at 1.425V. I took my ram off Auto, and took an educated guess at 2.8V for 3200 DDR 400. It's crunching Prime95 right now, so when I get home I'll have about 16 hours of crunching done.
