Hey everyone,

First, here are my system specs:

Maxtor 200GB SATA 7200rpm
WD 80GB IDE (backup, I suppose)
DFI Ultra Infinity II
AMD Athlon XP 2500+

Friday night when I went to go shut off my computer I was surprised by the fact that everything basically went along fine until my system hung when the screen was black and the fans and everything were still on. As in, there was nothing I could do outside of hitting the power button. Yesterday morning I woke up, tried turning on the computer, and found that I got the BSOD with error code 0x0000007B and an "inaccessible boot device" error. I did a little reaserch and came to the conclusion that there just happened to be a bad sector on my drive. I went to the recovery console in DOS and tried running a CHKDSK from C: (my main SATA drive) but it said "invalid volume". I already had a Max Blast 4 bootable CD (which doesn't do any diagnostic work) and it seemed to detect my SATA drive fine. When I used Maxtor's Powermax program, the SATA isn't seen at all and only my WD is detected.

So now I'm stuck. I don't know what to try next. I'm hoping the drive isn't a bust and I can maybe salvage some papers and letters I was writing.

any help would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance.

Just a little note:

The night before, my computer crashed again and when I rebooted, I get an "install new hardware" window and apparently the OS detected a floppy drive which I don't have installed.

Also, I haven't changed anything at all lately. Some minor software things here and there but nothing too drastic. The hardware hasn't changed either.

Also, when my computer starts up, the HD isn't listed in the primary drive category (i don't think it ever was, now that I think about it) but on the next screen which has always appeared briefly since I first installed the drive a year ago, the HD is listed and the size and all that is correct.

Did you check your bios in boot config? Sometimes the boot priority changes

thank you for the quick response.

the order was a little funked when i first stuck my xp cd in there to get to the command prompt, but even after i fixed it and tried several combinations, nothing changed.

playing around in BIOS FTMFW!!!!

I was wondering whether or not something happened to my SATA controller so i searched BIOS and found that the Controller was set for SATA RAID boot and my other options were "disabled" and "SATA". i thought to myself, "I don't have RAID setup", so I changed it to SATA and it boots up just fine now.

PHEW!!

thanks for you help, though. it was you that helped me realize that in a crash, BIOS options change sometimes. thanks,
