First Media server build

Hi everyone

First time posting up on the site but long time visitor. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on parts for a media server build. I'm not looking for a rack-mount since currently live in an apartment and GF would be pissed. I was thinking a few WD Green 2 TB drives with WHS.

Need suggestions on motherboard and cpu. My budget is about $1000 but flexible.

Plus 5x Hitachi 3tb, 2tb Hitachi, 1.5tb Samsung. Currently getting up and running with 5.0-rc3. No problems so far. Fits my overall goals: low-cost, redundancy in case of failure (not a backup! it's hosting replaceable data...) I know the config is overpowered for unRAID, but I wanted to have headroom for running software on it.
 
Apart from the fact that you want to spend money what are you looking for?
You can easily get a cheap Marvell Kirkwood platform for 100$ and hook up one or two HDDs and stream HD without any issues (they usually max out at 20-30mbyte/s.

Looking to centralize my collection of bluray iso with mymovies and backups. I was thinking 12TB in raid 6

There's nothing inherently wrong with it. I would go for the Intel Core i3-2120T instead of the 2130 though. It's low power and it's cheaper. While it does take CPU to calculate RAID it doesn't take that much. Any version of SB would be more than capable.

Oh and switch that boot drive. Go with a small SSD. No OS by itself will use that 1 TB.
 
Didn't look for a way to bypass the 160GB requirement till now. Might as well pick up one of those plextor drives the egg has on sale
 
A few remarks..

Motherboard
Keep in mind that Intel recently decided that consumers ethernet controllers are not for server platforms meaning that you're "on your own" as far as Intel is concerned. You can hack around this but I though that you should at least now that.Since its going to be a "server" you might want to consider som kind of KVM as it saves you a lot of hassle. ASRock Q77M might be a good choice in that regard and its much cheaper than the Asus board you've looked at. Keep in mind though that ECC might be worth the extra cost if you data is very important.

Case
You should really consider Fractal Design Define XL if you're not going for a rack solution, there's a white version (black and silver is available at newegg) that might be "GF-approved" but it doesn't seem to be available in US.

HDD:
WD Green HDDs are not always playing nice with HBA/RAID-controllers, so you might experience "interesting" side effects. Hitachi HDDs are generally recommended unless you go for SAS.

Controller:
Get a LSI SAS2008-based controller instead, the previous generation can't handle larger drives than ~2.2 TB and also provides poorer IO. You should be aware of that these cards can be very picky so it way or may not work in your motherboard. I can only confirm that it (reflashed IBM M1015) works in a MSI Z77A-GD65 (which imho is a better choice than P8Z77-V btw).

PSU: Good PSU although SeaSonic M12II 620W will do just fine and its much cheaper

Thanks for the tips. I decided on the CM case over the Fractal design because of cheaper price, more fans included ( I thought better airflow didn't like the mass of HDD on the bottom location), and plus better looks. Only real big concern was the how quiet the Fractal design cases were supposed to be but since it might not be on 24/7 not a huge issue. Good choice on the controller think I'll pick it up.

The egg had 10% off and free shipping on the PSU so I decided to grab it. I have gotten corsair parts before and have always been pleased with the quality.
