Hey,

Just got my first mac! MBP, i know windows inside and out but where do i start with os x? What do you guys love about your macs? What apps should i be downloading?

Give me your mac genius lol!

My list for every mac I own (non server) is

Firefox
Adium
iStat Menus
uTorrent
Colluqy (IRC)
VLC
Ultra VNC
Microsoft Remote Desktop
Coconut Battery (Laptop)

I use my Mac like I use my PC. There are some apps on the Mac (Adium, Colluqy) that I wish were on PC, but the reality is that I don't love it any more then my PC, Having things like SSH and Telnet built into the OS, and a pretty decent network troubleshooting GUI baked in are nice too, but at the same time I like VMware workstation much better then I like player, Office 2011 is nice, but I like office 2010 better, and I hate paying for stuff. On the mac it seems you get nickled and dimed everywhere you go. Simple apps that are usually free on PC are payware on the Mac.

So overall welcome to the cult, punch is on the table.
 
downloading adium just now, hating microsoft messenger for the mac, over all the system seems pretty damn good. loving the back lit keyboard and this i5 just eats up everything i ask it to doo!
 
Adium is absolutely a must-have. Or if you only use AIM, iChat with Chax is also acceptable.

Transmission is a better torrent client than uTorrent at the moment, IMO. uTorrent takes months to update their beta releases, and the Mac version is still nowhere near the Windows version in usefulness or utility, IMO.

My personal list:

MPlayer OSX Extended (or MPlayerX, which has better surround virtualization, IMO)

And familiarize yourself with Services and Automator. They will make your life so. much. easier.
 
Adding Transmit to the list. FTP client that I wish I had on my Windows machines, really nice.

whats installed so far:

Firefox - Safari was nice on the mac but i have always loved firefox
Office 2011 - Home comfort really, use outlook for exchange but i am using Mail for my personal email
Adium - Seems great, no webcam support but? or have i just not seen the button?

what to you suggest to geek up the desktop, looks pretty cool standard but you know can always look better!

You can try out GeekTool if that’s your thing.

Also install BetterTouchTool. Lets you customize trackpad gestures however you want, including global and per-app settings.
 
Geek tool is installed but not used any scripts for it yet. will look into bettertouchtool!

I use almost the same apps I use elsewhere, Firefox, Dropbox and OpenOffice. If use the terminal/SSH a lot iTerm is nice.

A lot of new apps, like Pixelmator, are arriving now do the ease of distribution through the App store. Check out some of the Top 10s.

Minimal Mac is a nice blog which focus on apps.

Quicksilver and Launchbar can help you do almost anything with just the keyboard.
 
BetterTouchTool is a MUST for mbp.

Minecraft!

All my other favorite apps have been mentioned.
 
I'll add AppCleaner to the list:

If you don't like one of these apps, you drag it on top of this app, and it'll cear out the Preference and Application Support files that go with it.

Transmission is the better Torrent client on OS X, IMO

If you have any USB Audio devices (Headsets or the like) you'd want to look at SoundSource

Everything else has really been said. Didn't realize how few programs I really use :p
 
If you have multiple computers in your house regardless of different OS's get Dropbox!! It's the best!
 
There are lots of apps in this thread that I would also recommend, but since it's mostly covered, I'll help you in this way. I'm a productivity whore. I'm crave efficiency and that is why I prefer OSX to Windows (they both can do the same things)

Learn the Keyboard Shortcuts, as many as you can.

I also highly recommend Quicksilver or another launcher. There are arguments for using other ones (because Quicksilvers' development has been dying off for sometime) but I haven't bothered to try and fill it with something else because Quicksilver still works and is still very powerful.

Those two things alone have saved me so much time it's ridiculous. I would also highly recommend learning about Spaces and Expose for maximum desktop efficiency.

This is how I feel. Though I would add Quicksilver http://www.blacktree.com/ and (well I guess it is dying, but for now) http://nambu.com/ to that list.


Though I have to disagree on Firefox. My experiences with it on OS X were never that great. I actually ended up using Safari ever since they got extensions for everything I wanted http://extensions.apple.com/
 
Does the Safari Adblock actually block them from loading or just not display them? Surprising, I had no idea that was out.. Also, does Safari create a separate process for each tab so it won't clog everything down when one page is misbehaving?

Yes, it prevents ads from downloading.

Not currently. The WebKit2 API was built for that sort of sandboxing, and it’s included in the build of Safari included with the Lion developer preview. But as of Safari 5.0.4, there’s no sandboxing.
