ok after reading the various faqs and some googling im at a bit of a loss. I just scavenged a 80 x 40 line lcd from a tsr80 model 100 portable. What im wondering is has any one used this in a mod to show things like temps fan speed etc before or does any know how to do it? Any info on chips that are on the lcd or the portable it self i can get off the chips easy enough.

you start by seeing what chips are on the back of the lcd.
look up the chips and see if its parallel or serial interface.
If its not parallel or serial, you need to do a lot of work.
so what are the chip numbers ?

exactly as wrote on chip
3j1 3
hd44102ch
and are almost sqaure in shape there are 10 total 5 face up 5 face down
another chip reqtangle in shape
3k1
ha17902p
1 of them
the 2 small square chips marking on them are
3j13
hdbld
44103

hmm cant realy find much on the chips.
The ribon is 30 pin with 2 rows of 15 pins

ok, thats not good
First, the HA17902 is just a OP amp.
The HD44102 is a column driver and the HD44103 is a row driver.
They are also refered to as low level drivers.
The chips control where in a row and where in a column it displays a dot, there is no controller chip.
You wont be able to hook it up to a parallel port unless you get a controller board.
I think its time to look for something else.

hmm
Well i do have the rest of the portable comp it came out of.
Which means the controller will be there (probly part of the main board or what about the small square chips marked
3j13
hdbld
44103 ?

Well, it would be a lot of work.
IF you could find the controller chip in the unit,
AND you could remove it ok
AND you knew the pin out
AND you made a PCB to mount it on
AND you knew the pin out of the display
it MIGHT work

This is the kind of thing you need

They go for around 50-60 bucks, BUT you can buy a good lcd for that
so there really isnt any point is there?
Grab a nice lcd from ebay for 10-15 bucks and start playing.

Look for the 44780 controller chip.
Good luck
