First Intel...e4300

I bought my first Intel CPU the other day, I bought an e4300 retail from the Egg. This happens to be the first Intel processor I've ever used, and is also going to be the first one that I'll get to fudge around overclocking.

Right now it's going to be paired with a Biostar Tforce965PT board, that I KNOW is good for at least 360Mhz on the FSB. So I shouldn't have any major issues there. Also, I've got 2 gigs of Teamgroup DDR2-800 to play with (I can get them over 550 no prob), so I think that should suffice as far as the memory goes. If the motherboard comes and is limiting my OC, I would be interested in going the DS3 route, if needed.

However, I've never touched the BIOS on an Intel board before. I've overclocked AMDs, but from what I've seen, the Intels are quit different. I'm not a fan of screwing anything up, so this is where you guys come in. :D - Do you guys know of any decent overclocking guides for Core2Duo's? Preferably one that would be easily understood by someone with very little knowledge in the area. Or even just some personal help/pointers/tips/advice, it all helps.

i made the intel move a month ago myself (to a 4300 as well), and this is the first time i am running an intel in my main rig, using an msi p6n-sli mobo.

My personal experiences are that if you have a mild amount of OCing experience (understanding the basic FSB * multiplyer thing) then its quite straightforward. TBH i dont think the bios makeup differs that greatly between an amd and intel machine. the only thing to keep in mind is the memory. with amd the memory speed is derived from the corespeed with a rather large divider, for intel the memory speed is derived from a ratio to the FSB

id say, just set the machine up, install windows, then dive into the bios and poke around a bit, its what i did
 
360MHz * 9 = 3.24GHz. I wouldn't count on that using the stock heatsink. My retail E4300 with the stock heatsink tops out around 3.15GHz. You could drop the multiplier in order to get a higher FSB, but that's not too important.

Like Dr. Freeze said above, the memory speed is a ratio of the FSB. The P965 chipset doesn't have many memory ratios, and at higher FSB speeds you'll pretty much be using 1:1 or 5:4. e.g. @ 360MHz FSB, 1:1 ratio = 360MHz DDR (720MHz effective) memory speed and 5:4 ratio = 450MHz DDR (900MHz effective) memory speed.

You'll probably only be fiddling with FSB and voltages for overclocking. I didn't mess with memory or chipset voltage, or with PCI-E speed, but you may need to play with those voltages in addition to the CPU voltage for a stable overclock.
 
I really hope you got a good OC'ing chip. I've heard many times some chips overclock and some don't. (they're only guarenteed to run at the advertised clock) Please post more when you actually start OC'ing. There are many forums specifically devoted to OC'ing.

Pad mod that E4300 and get it up to 2.4 GHz where it should be (personal opinion) and then run with it from there. Good cooling, good TIM (Arctic Silver 5, always), and you're home free.

Read this guide, it is mostly for the 680i MBs but explains the basics for Intel OCs.

I have found the 4300 to clock very easily to 3.1 Ghz and 50C full orthos load with the stock cooler on a Gigabyte p965-DS3.

I have the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 also, which has a stellar guide on the motherboard forum by Bill Parrish, but it may help cover a lot of general stuff for you.

Get a good HSF and hopefully your BIOS can save settings and reload them like the DS3's. Otherwise, start mid 2+GHz and work your way up. I couldn't get mine to run faster than 380x9 but settled on 370x9 for 3.33GHz after a crash or two at 3.42GHz. I was honestly hoping for 9x400 but she won't boot up past 380 :(

Anyway, it's a bit random depending on the actual processor you received, but 3.0+ is cake at the very least.

Btw, that thread I linked covers a LOT of questions and stuff concerning RAM timings and OC as well.

go as high as you can , stress it, and make sure your temps are below 60c ;) youll be good my man. Post your clocks when you get em :D

Board and CPU should be here Tuesday, and should start overclocking soon thereafter. Should be fun!

I think I may end up pad-modding it after all. It's only a few bucks, and that essentially turns it into a ... e6600 at those settings, right? :D

You really don't need to do the mod if your MoBo clocks worth a poop though, I see no real reason to take the risk. I get fairly good OC's out of mine without the mod...............;)

Yeah, forgot about the damn cache. :eek:
And I'll probably mod just for the hell of it really. Because if I happen to break it in the coming...month or so, it ends up equating to me buying a new Core2...
And I think there's some major price drops coming? :D
 
I just setup a new machine with the e4300 and an Abit IP35 Pro mobo that I bought for the sole purpose of ditching it for a Q6600 in a few. Out of the box I OC'd it to 2.7Ghz on stock cooling and the highest temp I've seen it hit so far is 38C. I'm tempted to push it higher but I'm hesitant for some reason. At any rate this PC is loads better than my old machine which is a AMD 3700+ Shuttle system.
