First Hack For The XBox 360!!!!!!

"The team advocates hacking, not piracy."

I had a good laugh over that...

someone else hacked it but also refused to release info about it, whats the point of doing so if your not letting out to the public?

does show how ruthless hacking community is, and there could also be an xbox pluged into the back AV ports running the real game so in no way can this be taken as real

I'm pretty sure that someone else was The Specialist. And he was listen in the credits in the beginning :)

I agree that this could be faked though. Oh well, time will tell.

I dont think they have faked it. There is a website up somewhere (i cant remember it off the top of my head) that shows all the discussions about the research they were doing etc...

I reckon they have managed to do it. Thing is this mod only allows the running of pirated games...not the use of homebrew and other unsigned code...until that happens I'm not really interested.

Homebrew on the 360 is a very interesting prospect. It already has a drive that will recognise most forms of current gen media (CD-R, DVDR etc) unlike the old xbox where it was a bit touch and go unless you had a Samsung drive (which thankfully I did), the HDD is very accessible from a physical point of view. Get a new laptop drive with a large capacity and away you go. It has normal USB ports for a mouse/keyboard. Install linux on to it and you have PC ready to go that supports VGA, HDTV and SDTV out of the box. Built in IR for the remote so you could still retain the media functions easily. Would be a great thing to have...its pretty compact and looks ok so would fit in somewhere and not look too out of place. Granted all this can be done on an old xbox with a bit of effort so it wont be anything new. But I am sure the extra power could be put to use and the new styling would make it fit in much more nicely.

That brings up an interesting point Syphon.

Although it has been done on the first Xbox, it hasn't on the 360 and I think we can all agree that's all it takes. ;)

You know if you read that forum for a bit (and follow the clues), you realize he didn't realy hack the 360's firmware, but rather the firmware of the DVD drive so that it fakes the DRM protection (same thing A120% or D-tools does with drivers) He goes on to say that this hack is perfect for piracy since the 360s firmware is unaltered and it can't be detected by Live, but unfortunatly, thats all its good for.

They need to hack the firmware to run unsigned code, or at least get you around region encoding, thats the true goal. This hack is useless unless your a pirate.

All that hack does is get the DVD drive to report back to the 360 that it has a genuine disc in it even though its a copy. Hence my post saying that it just allows copied games to be run. As you say, its only useful at the moment if you are a pirate. The question is, with this being pretty much undetectable at the moment how many people will be tempted over to pirate their games??

They did release it... They've outlined (a number of times) every step they've taken to get where they are - from what needs to be hacked, to how it was hacked. The only thing they didn't release was an actual firmware itself and that is for obvious reasons (MS would sue their ass).

TheSpecialist and his team also hacked the original xbox firmware a few months back (December) and they didn't release that either - it was proven to work, but by that time modchips and the softmod had been readily available so it wasn't necessary.

The beauty about this hack is that backup games should technically be able to run on Xbox Live. Not only that, but you can't change the code/region-coding or else the changes to the game would be detected via LIVE... SO, you couldn't cheat, but you can't run homebrew or games from a different region either.

Either way, the only functional purpose of this hack is to run "backups"... which is pretty much saying pirated games.

Cool nonethless.

So let me get this straight, you can burn 360 games now and play the burnt copies on your 360? Is my interp is correct then

**Edit: I just downloaded the video. Man that sucks for MS. Let the piracy unfortunatly begin. :(

No...no one but these guys can do it at the moment. The process of theirs involves desoldering the DRM chip for the DVD drive. Then using a chip programmer to reprogram it with the hacked firmware. This is a long way for anyone but the hardiest core modders from doing.

Yes, and everyone is always wondering why anti-piracy measures are getting so tough. It's sad how theives are ruining our way of life because they think they have the right to help themselves to something they didn't pay for. It's just so sad............
