First foray into water cooling

I picked up a kit the other day, (ThermalTake,) yea I know it’s not the highest quality but I wanted an ‘all in one’ solution that was compatible with a socket A board and it was relatively inexpensive so it fits nicely into my test bed.

Big question is, does it matter where the radiator is placed, (single 120)? I’m coupling the water cooling with a mod I’ve been working on, (for way to long mind you,) and I wanted to place it in the top of my case, venting out.

It's an old Antec SoHo case, so there is plenty of room in the case for it but the exaust fans/intake fans are all 80's.

Are there issues with this configuration or is it a bad idea to leave it lying flat like that?

The top is a good place because (assuming you have a case fan or two) the radiator fans can be off and you will still have air movement across the radiator.
 
On the top is fine, so long as it's a kit with the pump and rad seperate... Some of those rad+pump+res units don't like to be mounted in certain orientations.

Which kit?
 
BigWater SE, the water block needs a good lapping but everything else looks good so far. The only negatives I've read about it to this point is that the pump isn't all that great... so I might end up picking up another pump to replace this one, (all depends how this one runs/holds up.)

Well, it's not particularly a BAD kit... But there's just no piece of it that can be replaced that will really help you out. Everything's a bottleneck in it.

If you get another radiator, you're held back by the waterblock. If you get another waterblock you're (generally) held back by the pump.

For safety concern, I'd throw in a Dtek Fuzion waterblock. Those acrylic TT blocks have been known to shatter :eek:

Course, which CPU are you cooling? If it's any Athlon XP that's not crazily overclocked, there's no real reason to update any part of the kit.
 
It's going on an XP 3000+ don't plan on OC-ing it much, (I don't think there's to much overhead for it to OC honestly.)

I was mostly looking for something to quiet things down and give me a good jumpstart into the WC world, (all-be-it a cheap/weak one).

the CPU will ultimately be the only thing in the loop.
