My P4 box is down. /sniff Both with onboard NIC and a known working Netgear NIC windows is not acquiring an IP address. I've tried different ports, different cables and all other computers on the 16 port are working flawlessly.

So looks like I need to format C: and reinstall windows XP if that does not fix it then it is going to be replaced.

:(

Old AGP P4 was a trooper for years, hoping just a reformat and a reinstall of xp will do it!

 
Solution:

My main router needed a reboot... which is beginning to be of some concern. I may be in the market for a new router. Its about 4 years old and has every 2 weeks or so needed to be reboot. I didn't think it was that because of the other 4 computers all worked., but when a 2nd machine began not being able to obtain an IP address it really threw the flag for something was wrong related to the router.

Ah well all back up and running! :)

 
Glad that you found out what the issue was. I was going to offer you a couple NICs, but you seem to have everything back under control. ;)


 
Yeah I had tried another NIC and was like what is going on I figured maybe DHCP client in windows took a crap and was corrupted, but when a 2nd machine started doing it... I knew it was something bigger. I will have to research a more um enterprise lvl router soon. Having something like 10 connections to a 4 port router with a 16 port switch attached is taxing the 4 port router to say the least. It was never meant for this sort of load. My pipe is 6MB/s so I have plenty o bandwidth. Its just getting lower end enterprise equipement into place to increase stability.

A LOT of reviews on the later state issues as it ages... I'm guessing that is exactly what I am experiencing now and the one I am thinking of will provide endless expansion in the future with increased stability.

On the bad side I don't remember any of my dsl information lol... So setting it up again will most likely take a phone call to the dsl provider!

Plus:
1. My network should be 100% stable under much heavier loads
2. PPD evening out
3. Allows for unhindered expansion!

Negative:
1. Cost for 399.99 I could put another Quad into production

But I think #1 under Pluses is the key. Getting stuff reliable where I don't have to touch the clients for months on end is where I need to get!

 
I solved the router issues by building a Endian Firewall box to do the task. It run fine for over 1 year and the bonus is that I managed to setup a folding client to run :)

 
Don't buy a router /firewall.

Use an older boxen, and download Untangle.

It is more than a router... it also down anti virus, anti-spam, anti all sorts of things. I love it!

Yeah... I have a few older folders that would be perfect for this... as long as I can continue to fold on the box at the same time, I'm going to have to give this a try:)

 
And, this could be a great excuse for building a quad "security" boxen! Easier to convince the wife/husband/partner that another machine is needed if it is going to protect the network (and covertly fold)...:D
