I have an 80gb hd that im currently using on my desktop. I wanted to just stick this thing in my new comp but it is full of stuff I need, will I have to reformat the drive to use it in the new comp or can I just install a new copy of windows on it since it should already be the right file system?

Thanks

Assuming your installing the same Operating System the file system should be fine

If you are installing XP during the inital portion of the install if you try and install over a previous version of windows itll prompt you if you wish to delete the old version. Ive had great success doing this in the past.

So you should be fine

It really does depend on what OS it is and what chipset is on the previous board and new board (ie: Intel, VIA, etc..). Then typically you can take steps to repair the OS to work with the new setup. However, your best bet will be backing up your data and loading a clean install of your OS. It just runs a lot better than keeping the same load typically.

using my way mentioned above is a clean install sorry I should have explained better

FOR XP
Attempt to Install XP as a fresh install(ie boot off CD)
One of the first things it will do is try and detect whether you have a copy of windows XP installed
When it detects you do it will prompt you to repair or re-install over this copy
Choose re-install
choose delete existing copy

and your laughing, for anything other than XP or 2000, itll be alot more work

BigTaf - does that save all your data?

If so, cool! That's a trick I hadn't tried.

nothing is changed except it deletes the windows directory

works beautifully

I guess I didnt specify, theres just files on there no os so will I just be able to plug it in and go?
