First ATI Card - X850XT

okay. I had a really shitty 6800 Vanilla, but I RMA'd it after I was sick of the yellow stars artifacting, and I picked up an X850XT that i had been eyeing. I uninstalled the drivers before I took out the card, so there's no Nvidia crap in there as of now as far as display drivers go.

But...I know NOTHING of ATI drivers. What's this Catalyst stuff...and...yeah. These are the drivers I take? I've done a lil research with ATI tools, but I don't know much about this. I've been an nvida junkie for too long. :eek:

lol. Okay, screw catalyst. Go search omega drivers and download the Ati omega drivers. Install those instead. i had no problem with them when I had my X800. They actually gave me more performance and they give a bunch of extra overclocking utilities, etc... but if you want catalysts, yes, they are the ones you take.
 
I agree that CCC sucks my left one. You can download the standalone drivers (newest version) off of ati's webby, i recommend that.

If you do feel like downloading cat's, get the 6.3 with control panel - those are the best performing ATi drivers I have seen.



You can prob get them from following Tonezorz directions (I updated it):

Instead of clicking Radeon on the ATI site, click FireMV, then previos drivers. This links you to a download page with the 6.3 catalyst drivers with the option of either the CCC or the Control panel!!

OH MY GOD THIS THING IS SO BLOODY LOUD! I crank up the speeds to 50% during games...and wow it's loud. It's loud at anything past that. 100%...forget it.

What's a SAFE temp for this thing to be running at? I'm used to seeing 51C max on my old card...so these 60C's are kind of scary. For a card like this, is 70C's okay?
 
I have X800 XT and it runs at close to 85C all the time, the highest temp i got to was 102C. So I think 70C is fine.

If youre on the stock cooler, shens. Try running ATItool artifact scanner and see how hot it gets.

Uh, OK... I AM on the stock cooler, and using both ATItool and CCC, it tops out at 65C full load, 47C idle. Guess somebody can't believe an ATI stock cooler can actually work as it's designed...

I had one of those cards. It got much hotter than that. Much hotter.

are you sure its running 3dclocks when youre running the scanner?

Good for you, not all cards are the same.

edit: X850XTs don't have separate 2D/3D clocks, BTW...

No, they're not. However, a 20-30C delta between cards is very hard to believe. If you have some magical card that runs at or below 65C 100% of the time, fine, whatever. Its not the norm though, I've never heard of or seen that card run that cool under full load. Im not going to argue about this with you, its asinine.

edit: oh, thought they did. my bad. Been messing with the x1k series too much :p. My ownership of that card was very shortlived anyhow, it was worth way too much for me to keep it.
 
Right now i'm Idling at 45C with my clock speed at 32%.

Eh. I guess this is...bearable until I can put my speakers on. Sigh*

There's a real high pitched noise that's annoying as hell.

I have the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu on my X800XT, which I run overclocked to 550/1100 and I've never broke out of the mid 50's for max temp.

The Zalman is a much better cooler than the Stock unit is. My 6800GT at 425/1180 barely brakes 60C with the thing on, while with the stock unit 90C+ was not uncommon.

Yup.. the cooler on that thing is a jet engine with a highpitched sqeel that makes my dog go NUTS. Ati runs pretty hot anyways, but a nice zalman brings the heat down quite a bit and also is nice and quiet. :cool:

How in the world did you get a CPU cooler that big on your video card? Got pics! Or did you mean the

I have an x850, and yea I know what you mean, the damn thing is a beast!

I recomend getting an Arctic Cooling Silencer. I got one for about $35 CAD (plus shipping and such), and at 100% it's completely silent! (Hence the name). OCed to 580/1044, the idle is about 41-44 degrees C, and in game it's never gone above 70 degrees C.

Now you lucky were able to get the full 16 pixel pipes if I recall correctly? What did that do to your heat output?
 
I'm idling at 38C, and maxing out at 70C.
