I was having ping problems with a netgear WGR614v5. I upgraded the firmware and fixed my ping problems, gaming is flawless now. However, shortly after I realized that my download speed was capped at 40kb/s!!

It's not the ISP either. Is there custom firmware for netgear routers or some better option?

What if you try a reset to defaults....
Is MTU manually set according to what you have? 1492 for PPPoE DSL, 1500 for cable and bridged DSL. I say "manually set" because I don't like "auto" setting for MTU...it's often incorrect.

Hasn't helped. Bandwidth is capped at 40. Multiple computers.

Need a different firmware.

Dunno....try a factory reset?
Backflash to your old firmware? I've never seen 3rd party for Netgear products...not fond of that brand either.
