wanting to pick up a firewire 800 card.

I would like to find a PCI card as my motherboard layout is kinda cramped and the pci 1x slots are not easily usable.

i've seen a lot to choose from on newegg, but i'm wanting to pick up one that doesn't need the 4 pin floppy connector to power it.

or do they even NEED that plugged in?

thanks

Also, IIRC, stick to TI controllers for the least headaches.

Firewire can provide up to 45 Watt of power to connected devices.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI#Connector_pinout

PCI supports up to 25 Watt per PCI slot.

So the power connector is a requirement if you connect more than a few powered Firewire devices to the controller card.

nice, didn't notice that in my research.

also, looks like PCI won't work for me. pci bus won't support full speed 800 speed unless its pcix.

pcie x1 should work though, i just have to find a card that isn't very deep.

i've seen a few cards that don't have the power connector, which i'm sure i don't even need. i may hook up an external powered harddrive to it, but the card will primarily be used for my sandisk extreme compact flash reader.

thing i dont like is that any of the cards, i've never heard of the brands of them. i would gladly pay a lot more for a name brand card, but there are none!
