Right, I'll get straight to the point. I'm looking to build a firewall that would double as a fileserver. At the moment I'm leaning toward using ClarkConnect since it seems to be able to handle both.

It would only be serving 1-3 people at any time. I also wouldn't need an extreme amount of storage, somewhere between 40 and 60GB. Basically, what I need from you guys is hardware suggestions. I've come into a bit of money recently, so price isn't a factor. The reason that I'm asking is that I've never completely built a computer before and don't want to burn money on unneccessary hardware.

If more info is needed or I've gotten something wrong, feel free to ask/correct me.

ClarkConnect is pretty good. I've used it myself a few times. If the data is for a business, or something critical, I would consider a RAID1 array...maybe with 2 120 GB drives or so. And maybe a cheap DVD burner for backup.

The PC probably doesn't have to be real powerful, so you could save some money there. Maybe an old 20 GB drive for the system partition and firewall, and then the RAID array for storage from a cheap Promise RAID card.

Nothing business related, it will primarily be used for sharing music and video files between myself and a few friends. My only concerns are performance and reliability, If I can satisfy those two needs, I'll be happy.

Nice suggestion. I'd completely forgotten about doing any type of backup.
 
I toss in another vote to stay with clarkconnect. Unless you really want to delve into linux or *bsd and do some hardcore learning, stick with clarkconnect, and get a box that has a semi decent processor (better yet, get a dual processor box...I Recommend dual 450Mhz PII) and make sure the box has lots of ram....I haven't priced out SDRAM lately, but if you can get a couple of 512Mb sticks of pc133 and throw them in with a dual 450 mobo...and then get perhaps a couple of 80Gb drives and put them in a RAID1 (thats mirroring isnt it??) and then a little 10 or 15Gb for the OS, you would be gold....
