I have a wireless router with built in firewall and NAT. I've also just been trying to set up networked printing. Long story short, Zone alarm which I also have installed locally on each of my machines was stopping network printing.

Now I've got round that by setting a rule allowing ip addresses within my network range, but excluding my gateway. That's stopped me from browsing t'internet, so I included the ip address of the router in the rule too.

Now by saying the ip address of my gateway is trusted, have I screwed up my security or does the NAT mean I'm still safe?

You are still safe. If you have a firewall in your router then you don't even really need a software firewall except to protect you on a LAN. The software firewall gives you application control though if you feel you really need that.
