Before last winter the AC fans in our fireplace started doing wierd stuff. Basically starting up really slow and stalling every once in a while. Then some components on the speed controller blew. I had no way of fixing the original controller since it was ancient in the first place. I bought new AC fans and built a speed controller and couldn't get a smooth waveform out of it to drive the fans. I could of broke out some college books and fixed it, but... I about electrocuted myself when taking it all apart. AC wasn't my strong point in school, I am more of a DC guy... :)

So I took some measurements and what do you know, 120mm fans would fit perfect. I bought two Thermaltake 120mm (Blue L.E.D.) fans with a rheostat and automatic temperature control. I bought a cheap 12V DC power supply to power the babies. I thought the auto-speed control would of been cool, but then I realized the fireplace gets alot hotter than my CPU would. So I just went with the rheostat and my parents were happy that their fireplace was back up to speed. Here's some pictures:

I was worried about that also, it does get pretty hot. But not hot enough to melt the fans. The heat makes them a little more brittle, so if anything is placed on top of them causes the blades to scrape the frame. As you can see I tried to explain this to my Mom, but she just didn't get it... They made it through one winter, hopefully they will make it two.

That's pretty cool!

Now if you really wanna be impressive, get a couple modded 120mm fan grills for those fans!! ;)

wouldn't the heat melt those fans?

Yeah, I could be worried about that too, and the potential fire hazard of plastic as it does burn. Those CoolerMaster aluminum fans would have been a better application here.

Aluminum would of been a smarter route. I'll get them when these die. But the metal around the fan doesn't get as hot as one would think. I added some grills but it restricted too much airflow so I removed them.
