I've been considering buying a video card for a new computer for quite a while. I want it to be targetted primarily for SolidWorks and other 3D CAD software (e.g. CATIA). I may play a game or two once in a while.

I read on the SolidWorks website that many video cards (perhaps ones that you may be tempted to recommend) are targetted for video games because they focus on good performance with DirectX. Soldiworks, they say, requires good performance with OpenGL.

Also, the solidworks website offers charts of "suggested" or "tested" cards. Among them, QuadroFX is very popular, as well as the FireGL models. I went back to tomshardware Workstation benchmarks, and found that the cards that are included cost 500+ dollars.

That is beyond my budget. However, the only FireGL card I found under 300 dollars was the "ATI Fire GL V3300 128MB DDR2 Workstation PCI Express Graphics Card".

Unfortunately, there are no benchmarks for this card on tomshardware (at least not on the "workstation" benchmarks).

How is the performance of this card compared to other cards in that price range?

Lastly (and this may be a silly question), do some video cards perform better with specific processors and other hardware? (ie AMD + ATI is better than Intel + ATI).

how hard do you want to use cad apps, because a regular vga is able to handle such things without problems, and a firegl or quadrofx isnt cut out for gaming (well they are able to handle them, but not as nice)
 
I need to use CAD applications ont he new machine. That is the main purpose of having the computer.

Is the performance of workstation cards like FireGL much better with CAD Apps than regular VGA Cards? If the performance in CAD is only slightly better (at least with the v3300), then I will get a VGA card; but if the performance is much better with CAD, then it is more important for me to get the fireGL.

So I suppose the question is: does FireGL v3300 greatly outperform VGA cards (in that price range) with CAD Apps (ie. 3d rendering)?
