Fios vs. Cable

I currently have cable but am debating on getting Fios (Fiber-Optic internet). I have heard Fios is amazing, is this true? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

It's all relative. Some service providers provide better service, products, etc. than others. In theory you should be able to get higher speeds than cable for about the same price, but that all depends on the packages offered by your service provider...

No, it is not relative when comparing to FIOS Fiber Optic. Get the FIOS no question. I am waiting for it to become available in my part of New Jersey and then I will be dumping Comcast for it.

My vote goes for Fios. Too bad it will never be available in St. Louis. I'll just have to hope SBC/AT&T fiber will be god-like. I will drop Charter like the worst habit.....YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!

Download really depends on your local cable provider. Upload, however, is FIOS territory. It's probably cheaper than your cable service too.

I'd give up Comcast for 5/2 or 15/2 any day, but sadly, my city (Boston) won't be getting it for another 5 years probably.

no dice for me...

let me guess... its gonna start on the coasts and take 5 years to trickle into the midwest?

Nope, the FIOS service is offered by Verizon. If Verizon offers phone service in your area, you're on the list to get it eventually.

Verizon doesn't cover my area in Dallas, TX so I have to wait for SBC to go fiber.

The neighborhood two major streets over is Verizon and they are already FIOS. A friend of mine at work just signed up for their TV over fiber service.

My parents, who live in a neighborhood built in the late 50's, 10 minutes from where I live, have already been moved to fiber (Telephone service as well) by SBC, but they didn't chose to go with higher speed Internet service. They stayed with 1.5Mb/256 service for $19.95 a month.

Me, I'm over 14000 feet away from my CO, and my neighborhood is low down on the fiber deployment list. My options are currently commercial dsl at 128/128 for $115 a month or Comcast at 6Mb/384 for $42.95 a month when bundled with cable TV service.

I long for FIOS like service without the customer billing nightmare that occurs when even the smallest change occurs with my Comcast account. Sigh...

How is it not relative to the provider that is supplying this service? It's no different than comparing cable providers, or even car manufacturers, some are better than others. Just because the potential is there does not mean your service will be worth a damn, for example, some people Love Comcast, others hate it, some people hate Cable Internet service, but Love DSL. I'm not saying it won't be a world of difference, I'm just saying that mileage varies...

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Verizon after working for a Global ISP and dealing with them as a LEC for several years...

someone told me that Verizon blocks torrent ports, is this true?

I haven't heard anything regarding this, though ISPs are known to block the standard BT port range (6881-6889).
