Alright, so right now I have:
2x 250GB WD SATA2 drives (bought)
2x Samsung sp2504c
Pentium D 805 (It was cheap, don't need tons of power, but dual core is nice)
Asus P5LD2 mobo
Some DDR2 667 ram
Promise TX4 SATA controller

I am planning on doing linux software raid 5 with the 250GB drives (I have a boot disk), any thoughts as to the data security with that?

I need a video card that is really cheap, PCI-E and well suported in linux. Can you disable nvidia's TurboCache? because this seems to be a decent solution.

What do you think of that controller card? Is there any way I could get any kind of hardware raid for that price or a little more? I don't care if the CPU has to do the XORing.

Any other comments?

the only drawback about that controller is the PCI interface. However, I have yet to see a cheap, 4+ port PCIe controller, so I don't think you have much of an alternative.
