Hi, well it just so happens that the only time i dont insure a international package that it gets stolen right from the delivery company employe. When the package came through thier delivery place one of their employes cut the bottom out, remove a very nice laptop and re seal it and send it on its way. So my question is, is there any possible way of locating the laptop via its MAC address? or maybe an IP address? Open to all suggestions, and have allready called the delivery company and they have no way of knowing who did it so dead end there. Please help, laptop was for my brother in the Navy.

As someone who's also had stuff stolen internationally.. let me tell you this: usually there is nothing you can do to recover the physical item. MAC addresses can be spoofed, and IP addresses change depending on physical location. The only way I can think of is if the laptop is set up to remotely sync with a server you have access to (Apple's MobileMe & other such services).

Your best bet is to speak to your lawyer regarding possible ways you could attempt to get the company involved to compensate you. If this company is not from Europe, US, Canada, or country with an actual working legal system, you are probably completely out of luck, though. Or, at least, in dealing with Russia, I was.

Also, I know Dell and a few other companies offer Lo-Jack for Laptops (yep, same company for tracking stolen cars). We found all 12 Dell Laptops that were reported stolen in Hawaii, sitting in some guys garage in the Dallas / Fort Worth area in Texas.

Another thing is if the laptop had a built-in WWAN card (like a Sierra Wireless modem) then the ESN can be tracked when someone tries to activate it.
