finding a job v. tips

I'm only 19 but I was an intern working at a medium sized SMB because the owner was a friend. We had many projects including an entirely open source voip system based on asterisk, which is still used in their office today, and an entirely open source automated offsite backup system using backuppc and freebsd that i finished myself. I've had many jobs since then and that's the only thing i'm really interested in. After my boss there got into a thing with someone at his apartment complex and ended up being beaten with a golf club and in the icu for weeks, i ended up not getting a penny and out of a job. After a few restaurant jobs and getting screwed over there and a few jobs later, ive decided i want to get back into it.
It got me thinking it's definately where I want to go, so my question is where should I start? I'm thinking level 1 helpdesk or something and getting all my experience and proficiencies into a resume. any tips?
