Hi!

I've tried to read up on overclocking and I've also talked to some friends. The problem is that I cannot get my computer to overclock almost anything. I begin with my spec:

x2 4200
2x1024 corsair xms c2
asus a8n-e
1 hd 1dvd 1cd-rw
enermax psu 355W with 20pin->24pin converter

I'm suspecting the psu since it's pretty old. But it works fine at stock speeds and I can overlcock the graphics. I've also tried it with 3hds at the same time and it worked perfectly. It is just the overclocking that do not seem to work. I could get the fsb to 215MHz when I lowered the command rate to 2T. But it's not stable and since I had to lower the command rate I guess there's almost no point with such a small overclock.

Do you think that I have a hardware problem, the psu for example?
Or, should I higher the voltage to memory cpu etc before I exchange the psu? I thought I could get to 220MHz without changing voltage...

try running a divider (cpu:ram ratio). based on my experience with corsair ram, they don't have a lot of headroom when keeping the c2 timings (not a lot of ram does though). I suggest upping your timings (try 2.5-2-2-whatever or even 3-3-3-7) or running a divider.

if you read up you'll see most people will tell you that running 1:1 doesn't affect the a64s very much. same with timings vs speed...
 
You don't mention what graphics you're using.

You need a new PSU, end of story. That Enermax doesn't meet ATX12V v2.0 spec, meaning not enough amperage on the +12V output which is the most important these days. You need a new PSU... consult the Power Supply forum for some pointers.
 
That is a pathetic PSU for that cpu, that much memory and any new gen video cards. Get a 430W+ and make sure it's something like Antec, TT, PC P&C, or the likes of those.

Yes I missed the graphics. I have a 7800GT.

Good that you say psu. I tried a lot lower memory timings and it did not work good at all. I might get it stable at 210MHz. A friend of mine got a x2 3800 to 240MHz without any problems. He had a 430W enermax of the same type as mine.

I started to suspect that there were something wrong with my memory or that it just handles the specifikation and nothing more. In that case I will never buy corsair again.

Hehe! Sometimes I am a bit cheap. :) I guess I'll have to go for that Antec truepower 2 480W that I've been looking at.
 
the ocz powerstream 520 or even 600 is also a great choice if you plan to do some overclocking. I am very happy with mine.

I haven't seem them in any swedish stores I think.
But I guess I have to take this discussion to the psu forum.

Very good choice... as long as it is a TruePower II.
