my XTX is back from RMA, still squeaks/ chirps though :(

running my first ever GPU unit now.

Well, the "chirping" is going to drive me nutz at some point.. I need to find out what I can do about it, but it seems to be folding now. In retrospect (I got my card off e-bay NIB and had to RMA it about 2 days later) I really should have just bought a C2D system and made my life easier.

plus it appears that on my Opty 165 I need to disable one core completely in order to get decent performance (FahCore_10.exe takes ~50% CPU)

Never buy electronics off Ebay. Too easy to get burned, IMHO. Maybe just buy an aftermarket cooler/fan and call it a life lesson.

shouldn't need to disable, what are getting per minute?
both versus one

it failed while water cooled (MCW60). I really do not think it was an e-bay thing, since the card was sealed etc. Yes, I would have perferred to have gotten it from newegg or so, but they were sold out.

My anger is less directed at ebay or the seller, but rather ATi. Their RMA process is a major PITA and takes AGES.

why do you need to disable a core? You should have two FahCore_xx.exe running at about 50% CPU time.

blah, so it appears that my production took a nosedive, my ears are bleeding from the "chirping" and installing the ATi card has screwed up my video playback in IE. On top of it all, it "barely" overclocks to ~711/ 810 whilst being watercooled.

BETA

go back to default settings....just let it run one core, take your 660PPD
CPU client the other core

So based on the fact that it's watercooled I'm assuming the chirping is not coming from the fan :)
I had a motherboard that was making weird electrical noises...wouldn't overclock worth a damn. Had to RMA it.
Maybe it's time for RMA #2? Or you could always sell it at a bit of a loss and the new owner could RMA it. Some people don't mind doing this if they get a deal. Then buy a new one for yourself.

The chirping did not happen with my Overclocked 7900gt, it only occurs at full-3d load at 3d clocks and volts. It may come from my 600W PSU or the GFX card, but due to my PC's location is is hard to figure it out exactly.

What power supply are you using? They can make some noises that I'd describe as cicada-like if the inductors aren't glued into place properly.

You could take the machine out of the case and move the PSU away from the card a little to help diagnose.
