Finally! The iPhone!

At $499 and $599, and with storage capacity limited to 8GB, the iPhone is probably not going to cannabilize sales of the iPod. So my question: Where the heck is my 6G iPod w/ touchscreen interface???

A widescreen ipod with alot of gigs of storage makes TOO MUCH SENSE for it not to come out. I betcha in a few months we will be seeing such a product.
I just hope to hell it has wifi. I don't care about the phone features so much.

Multiple sources including engadget have confirmed it is completely closed.

Interesting read. If it runs OS X couldn't you load up open office and run that for word and excel files?

It'd be nice if someone came out with a device like Jason Stratham uses in the film The One.

Someone might get a kick out of this ...

The fact that it is a closed platform just puts the nail in the coffen for me. Sorry but I'd rather get a Palm 700wx
Actually, I did, and it was a $50 a month around 1000 minutes plan.

I have also talked to my friends that still have Tmobile and they get killed with roaming in my area as well....
Something is fishy here... a 1000 minute plan has been $39.99 for a long time...

Seriously, are you talking about 4+ years ago or something? My girlfriend has had T-Mobile for about 4 years and has never been charged for roaming...Hell, even when I had AT&T Wireless about 5 years ago when my family went to Canada and we didn't get charged for roaming either... is there any companies that still charge for roaming? I guess if you get some sort of regional plan and go out of that area you'd get charged roaming...

definitely.

but I would have liked to have the phone features too. More carriers and more storage and I would have bought one...

Ohh... yes! And I forgot to ask, does any one know whether there are any solid-state-storage cards slots, such as the 'Memory-Stick/Pro', 'SD/mini SD' and so on?

I wonder if there is an internal expansion like in most new cell-phones for 'Micro SD' cards.

Never mind just seen this on Engadget:

No 3G. We know you know, but still, it hurts man.
No over the air iTunes Store downloads or WiFi syncing to your host machine.
No expandable memory.
No removable battery.
No Exchange or Office support.

But I still hope for the internal 'Micro SD' slot....

This will be the devices major downfall. 5 hours of talk is great for a cell phone. But add into that WiFi, Web Surfing, Texting music use and so on. With no removeable battery this is VERY bad. Not all of us are near a PC all day.

Yes I agree, but if there is some after market or homebrew charging devices which could use either Double 'AA' batteries or some rechargeable you could expand the time to maybe 10hrs on video... which is reasonable for one day... But the bulk of an extra battery attachment would reduce the coolness of the product.

I would consider that, but its a pain in the ass. Plus they are losing money on accesories, every heavy phone user I know has extra batteries.

Apparantly, Verizon is raising text messaging fees for its customers in March, voiding your contract and allowing customers to to cancel.

Damn you red bars!

I was just about to post about this. As soon as you get the notice in the mail you have 60 days to call them to exit your contract without penalty. So, I get my music phone incentive for a great deal after I'm able to ditch them. eBay, here I come! :)

Honestly, though, this iPhone is sounding like a letdown. I sure hope they work out some of these obvious complaints before its launch. Otherwise, I don't see it getting adopted. Anybody heard anything about getting it on their prepaid plan? I usually never go over two hours per month, so I'm thinking about switching to prepaid indefinitely. I loved T-Mobile for this in Germany.

Unfortunately it sounds like you're going to have to pay full price if you want to use it with a pre-paid plan (if AT&T offers it at all).

im thinking that since the iPhone won't even launch for a while, Apple will incrementally improve the iPhone with more and more features. this will function in keeping the hype up.

Well this is the generation 1.0 iphone. You know there is going to be improvements down the line. The year has barely started. It will be a very interesting several months indeed! :)

Hopefully the next gen phone is released after Cingulars rain of terror has ended. Hopefully an unlocked version is available aswell.

Cingular as of monday technically do not exist anymore. Its AT&T you will be dealing with now. In fact, monday AT&T started airing commercials announcing that they are beginning to "de-brand" the word cingular from the marketplace.

does this bother anyone else?

http://gps.engadget.com/2007/01/17/the-widescreen-iphone-not-so-widescreen/

Well, anyone who sat in Moscone Center to witness the holy unveiling surely noticed the screen cropping (letterboxing) that occurred when Steve played Pirates of the Carribean. That's because the iPhone isn't "widescreen" as the term is customarily understood outside of the reality distortion field -- it is not a 1.78:1 (16x9) aspect ratio. Rather, the display utilizes a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. That puts the iPhone somewhere in the proprietary zone between the NTSC or PAL television standard 1.33:1 (4x3) and a proper widescreen 1.78:1 (16x9) aspect ratio like that thrown off Apple's new Apple TV.
