Finally overclocking 920 and worried about temps

I have an I7-920 in an asus MB that I just decided to overclock. I have a P180 case and a Noctura heatsink that has run flawlessly for 2 years.

I overclocked to 180 BCLK with a 20 cpu ratio and 1.25 cpu voltage to yield 3.6 GHZ. I turned off Turbo mode.

Prime 64bit - after a hour I'm getting max temps of 87 / 89 / 85 / 84. Idle temps are about 41 C.

Are these acceptable temps or do I need to do something to get them down?
 
Seems a little warmer than what i would expect. A few things though:

-- What are the ambient temperatures?
-- Have you reseated the heatsink in 2 years? (Would strongly suggest doing so if you haven't and with some MX3/MX4 if you have some)
-- Because of the age I assume you have a C0 chip and not a D0? (C0's generally run hotter)
 
I would say they are within the range of normal for the 920 in general. Maybe on the highend a little but nothing to worry about.
 
which heatsink? what fans? case fans? orintation? thermal paste?
 
-Ambient temp is probably 65 F.
-CPU-Z lists C0/C1
-Noctua Heatsink (I think the 120mm fan version) It's a tall metal tower w/excellent ratings.
-I haven't remounted the heatsink since original installation with Arctic Silver


One thing I noticed is that the heatsink felt completely cool when I touched the metal. Does anyone know if the outer surfaces of their heatsink actually gets warm/hot?


86 5.0L: I see you have a P180 case as well -- how hard was it to get your 920 to 4.2GHz? And what kind of max temps are you getting?

Right so you have a C0 so you'll be getting slightly warmer temperatures than people on D0's. I have a C0 @ 3.96GHz (1.33v) and running 83-85c on full load. Thats using a Coolermaster V6GT with 2x120mm fans that run at 2000rpm above 80c.. That's the end of my chip, can't overclock any higher without it being unstable really.

I would strongly suggest reapplying AS5 and reseating the heatsink to be honest and see what you get.
 
Reseating the heatsink is what I would recommend also. At full load on my 920 oc 4.0, I can feel the hot air being pushed through heatsink by the fan.
 
Try increasing your qpi/vtt voltage possibly, as that often allows a lower vcore.

the P180 has pretty bad airflow, so my temps get into the mid 80's or into the low 90's if I keep the heat in the room

I see you have a c0, those ran hotter then their d0 counterparts
 
If the heatsink feels cool to the touch, then you definitely need to redo the application. Even in my water cooling setup, where my temps never exceed 50 C, I can still feel warm air being pushed through the radiator.
 
Thanks for the push -- after reseating my heatsink I'm getting the following temps after an hour of Prime.

80 / 81 / 79 / 75 (down from 87 / 89 / 85 / 84 )


Is it common that one of the cores runs a good bit cooler?
 
yeah, my fourth core is usually 5* cooler, just the nature of the beast.
