I've had an Antec single rail 620W since the computer was built and I think my needs have finally escaped its capabilities.

It worked perfect with a 5770, then a 7870, but with a single 290x it will turn off the computer without warning within 10 minutes of gameplay. Additionally there are no error codes that pop up so I think this is another indication of PSU not keeping up.

Just ordered a 1000w EVGA platinum through amazon so hopefully that will solve my problems. I'll post back as soon as I get it installed. Plus this will let me crossfire 290x's eventually.

If anyone has dealt with PSU's not keeping up please post your thoughts so I can confirm that this is what is going on.

Thanks!

Sounds like it. If the PC is shutting off like you pulled the plug then it's likely the PSU. If its shutting down like you did it thru the start menu, freezing or BSOD'ing then it's something else.

Something else must be going on...Your sig rig shouldn't be pulling much more than 400W. Unless you're running a crapload of 300CFM Delta fans.

Getting a 1kW PSU for a single card is silly...and 20-30% overkill for dual-card. Maybe the 1kW is better, but I do not recall hearing good things about EVGA PSUs.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, no BSOD's, windows errors or anything else, just straight shutdown.

The 1000w is probably excessive, but it leaves me room to upgrade. The sig is off too, I have a 290x in there now and that's what is drawing in excess of what the old power supply can handle. Plus this way I can comfortably crossfire another 290x down the road and still have room to upgrade my cpu and overclock everything at somepoint.

No it is not. I meant what I typed.

A 290X single card system only pulls 400W and that is for the entire system, even for the most power-hungry of them 290X XXX OC blah blah blah. Read any review of a 290X card that includes a power-draw page. Unless you're really proposing that your PSU has lost over 30% of its rated capacity. Or that somehow you have the only 290X card on Earth that draws 400W of power all by itself.

I'd put my money on something overheating, either something on the card or the CPU.

620W PSU should be more than enough. I ran highly overclocked 290 on my 600W unit and there was still lots of headroom. Your PSU probably just crapped out and 290X was the last straw. 1000W is mind-bogglingly ridiculous overkill for any single GPU solution. Future AMD GPU power usage can only go down.

Check out the new EVGA G2 750's. More than enough power (agree that 1000 is overkill) and based in the superb Superflower Leadex platform. They usually run around $120.

those EVGA PSUs are garbage dude, read the review here

OP, your 620W PSU should be more than adequate. I have several Antec Neo ECO 620Ws running various quad core gaming rigs (i7 920 @ 4GHz + 7970GE, i5 2500K @ 4.6GHz + 7970GE, etc.)

Not the new G2's. Theyre based on the Superflower Leadex platform which is excellent.

Jonny Guru's review of the Superflower Leadex 750 (which is essentially the EVGA G2 750) 9.7/10

Jonny Guru's review of the EVGA G2 850. 9.9/10

TechPowerUp's review of the EVGA G2 750. 9.3/10

PC Perspective's review of the G2 750 and 850. Editor's Choice.

Considering the excellent performance and the $120 price point (after $10 MIR), the G2 750 might be among the best on the market dollar for dollar.

You were right, it was the 290x getting into overheating range, set up some custom fan profiles and it worked flawlessly. That being said, my antec 620 is at least 5+ years old and would be better relegated to a backup system than my primary work/fun computer.

Thanks

Man, that wouldve been way down on my list. When Ive ran into overheating, Ive had freezes and BSOD's but never a flat out, pull the plug shut down. Thats usually always the power supply on its way out. Glad you got it figured out.

yeah maybe it is a combination of factors, because you're right there never was an error message or a BSOD, just straight shut down. Looked up some reviews of the 1000 again after you posted them and they look really good. Got a pretty nice deal on the platinum one, it will be nice to clean up my case a bit with finally having a modular one rather than the rats nest of cables tucked into the bottom of the case.

Given how quick that card overheats I'd check or correct the cards sag due to gravity. Given how badly card coolers are secured these days it is easily possible the cooler is making poor contact.

I just ordered a seasonic 850w bronze, because the son's computer
with two 280x in crossfire shuts down every time he runs a benchmark,
or after about 30 minutes of gaming. So yes, it sounds like you figured the
problem out first go around.
You 290 is pulling around 400w alone under load, and then you have everything
else to account for as well. So, if you ps is not at peak performance. I could easily
see it failing you.

The new EVGA 1000W platinum is working awesome! This is my first modular power supply so I was able to clean up a lot of wires in the case and I haven't had any further issues with crashes or turn offs. Nice to know that I have ample room for a second 290x someday as well.

The old 620W will still be a good fit for running a backup system with a 7870.

I want a modular so bad. My trusty TX750 keeps plugging along but I want to upgrade and clean up my wiring a bit. Just can't make myself pull that trigger for some reason.

buy a cheap Kw meter for about $15-20 to have around home. Would be nice to plug this in to see "consumed" watts vs guessing. Anyway, good thing you got it chugging along and figured out :)
