Finally, new PC Gear! + Questions..

Hi there all!

I've just picked up and assembled my new PC, severely desecrating my bank account...

ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
1GB Transcend 3200 (2 512mb sticks)
HIS Excalibur Radeon X800 pro ICEQ2 Platinum
WD SATA 36GB Raptor 10,000rpm
WD SATA 120GB 7,200rpm

(Old PC being a P3 450, and the total HD space being equal to the 36gb raptor, you understand me being a little excited to finally upgrade!)

This is the first time in around 12 years of playing with PC's and parts that I've stepped out of the 'Norm' (Intel, 3dfx, nvidia..) and i have to say, i'm at the least 'not' discouraged.

My first question is in regards to 3DMark03 - I get 10024 marks, everything stock as a rock, is this good?

Overclocking has always appealed to me but i've never really 'jumped' at it - only overclocking my old GeForce 256 a touch, with good results.

So my second question is, with stock cooling - Power supply fans plus ICEQ2 on the video card and the fan supplied with the processor, how much could i overclock the processor SAFELY?

I'm VERY keen to know, as i'm sort of new to it, and when asking friends i get really mixed opinions, some say OC'ing is 'Dangerous, evil, yadda yadda..' while others say 'OC'ing a bit on the processor and video card could get you some important frames'.

You are right for the most part - however, there are a few things I have issues with

1. Overclocking isn't bad as long as you know you have limits and stress test after setting the new overclock to make sure all is stable and fine

2. Overclocking isn't something that people with not much modern computer experience should just jump into, because it's not hard to make a mistake and fry something on accident - I overclock my computer personally, but I am by no means a "n00b" with computers and modern hardware

I would suggest getting your computer set up completely the way you will have it running without any major changes, and start slowly, increasing the FSB by a few mhz every time (and making sure all is stable before bumping up any more)

With stock cooling, I wouldn't expect more than a few hundred mhz from the CPU, maybe 100mhz on the video card if you decide to overclock that (but with such an expensive setup, a new heatsink costing $50 or so won't be such a big deal)

at first i thought you said you got 10k 3dmark01's. then i saw the 03 yeah, that's pretty good. i don't even get 10k 3dmark01's

overclocking: i wouldn't expect much with the stock hsf. that mobo is k8t800, right? if it is you're kinda limited anyway (no agp/pci locks) if it is k8t800 pro or nf3 250 then you're good to go with respect to fsb. just take it slow and you'll be fine.

I've read through the board book and am sure that the chipset is the k8t800, not the 'pro', unfortunately. Will a BIOS rev come out to address the agp/pci locking ability for my particular board do you think?

So for someone like me who's not so experienced in the cpu game, I've heard Prime95 or CPU-Z are good programs to have to stress test any overclocking, is this so?

Also, i know i'm looking in the BIOS to change the FSB which should be easy enough, but are there other things i need to look for? I ask because i've heard things about multiplier settings and the like (i.e. 200 x 10 to 245 x 10 etc.)

The X800 was a breeze to OC, just like my old GeForce. Currently, from Core: 475 Mem: 450 - to Core: 520 Mem: 490 - And this adds nearly 500 marks to the previous 10024 score, awesome!
