Finally Making Progress

Well, After three weeks .... I think I have finally got all my problems worked out.

I have got all three up and running ... and were stable at 3.0Ghz (Q6600) Abit IP35-E

I decided to "towel" the nex boxen, and took the first boxen to 3.4Ghz - 50C Max Temp

Boxen two ...Oc'ed very well to 3.4Ghz .. but the temps were 58-50-48-52

Boxen three was almost the same but +5C on all cores ..

I have the Heatsinks and CPU here at work with me, and just got done lapping them.

They turned out very well, and will install in the morning.

On the P965 (ABIT IB9) I can't get over 3.0Ghz .... I think it is just the limit for that board and Quads .... It will prime fine for 10 hours ... but after 15 min of SMP , system will reboot ...

If I could find 2 more Abit Ip35-E ... I might swap them out ..

I found while I was testing my new boxen that dual Orthos running the Gromacs stress test pushed my boxen 5C warmer on all cores than running dual Linux clients inside VM's does.

I think for two reasons.
The VM's only load the cores to 94-97%, so you still have a little more overhead.
The SMP client loads the memory bus a lot more so the cores get loaded a little less.
Together it makes a difference.

Next time I restart, I may up my FSB from 345 to 350 and see if they all are still stable.

I do like the new HR-01X Xeon heatsinks.
Max core temp is now only 50C.

I run with 4x 120mm fans aross the two heatsinks.
1x blowing in & 1x sucking out on the ends, 2x blowing in streched aross the two sinks on the sides.
Keeps the second CPU cool that way.
If you set the fans to suck, dont use the anti-vibration strips, both of mine ended up in the fans.
If you have the headroom, these are the best heatsinks I've found for a Xeon.

That's for sure one hell of a heat sink and, not knowing much about the Xeon chip, certainly looks like the best HS for OC'ing the Xeon cpu.

By the sounds of your post you have figured out what and how many fans are most efficient. I imagine it's a lot of "trial and error" like finding the best fans for the TRUE 120 or it's younger brother the 90 one So as long as "Gods willin' and tha' creek don't rise" I'll probably stick with WC'ing, of course, I don't have near the number of machines you have. (WC'ing more than 1x or 2x boxen, IMO, is just too expensive and complicated for the benefits you get)

Edit: Oh yeah, I just thought of this. IMO some of the main (surely not all) benefits of using WC'ing are appearances and sex appeal. So I guess you'd use it for your main boxen primarily.

I'm afraid to make any comment, you know how most ladies are. (a man just can't win) But yeah, I think it does in a way, it's a good starting point for conversation. I think without all the computer enthusiasts, WC'ing is still a pretty interesting subject for the non computer enthusiasts.

Heaven forbid, I'm not in any way saying there aren't any lady enthusiasts . (I live right around the corner from the University of Washington) I just think there are more men enthusiasts and woman seem to want to know only the basics which usually means air coolin'

Ever since my first ThermalRight XP-90 I never looked back. These guys seem to have a really good understanding about what’s up with cooling.

As for water cooling, I gone the piece together yourself route, the “recommended kit” route and the Koolance Exos-2 route. Koolance won hands down, but, in the end these new TR coolers are just as effective, cost less and make less noise.

Just my humble opinion of course

Very impressive Air Cooled 420

Yeah, I'll probably always be a "Husky" fan, although I can't claim to be a "native" Washingtonian. I've always believed the "U Dub" is one of the US's finest schools. I was born in the Bronx, NY (many moons ago), but I've lived here in the NW for about 30+ years and I love it here, even with what seems like constant rain)

After everything is said and done. IMO, I think this area is full of very intelligent people (both male and female) and a very progressive area.(of course, not the only place in the US or the world and I don't include myself as one of the intelligent people )

Glad to be on the same folding team as you Air Cooled 420 and we's gonna' whip some monkey butt in the Chimp Challenge.

I like to go down to the "Ave" and just watch some of our younger generation. With exceptions, I feel confident and "at ease" knowing they are the "tommorrow" of our great country (US)
