Finally getting a decent folding rig

So, now that I'm finally getting a useful folding rig (one that will probably put out more PPD than all my current points when I get it running with a GPU client) I realized just how little I actually know about the high-end folding. So, some questions. Keep in mind I'll be using a Q6600, and running Windows XP. This won't only be folding, though that's what it will primarily do, I'll use it for some gaming/productivity software occasionally, so I have to run XP.

1) Is the best way to run it 2 SMP clients inside of VMs? I believe that's what I was told. If so, does anyone have any good tutorials on setting that up?

2) Once I put a new graphics card in it (either an 8800GT or a HD4850 depending on price) and start running the GPU client, will I still be able to run 2 SMP and a GPU, or will the GPU require too much processor power and force me to shut down a SMP clent?

Thanks for the help. I've been working 60+ hour work weeks, so finding time to seek out information is hard on me. Figure some of the knowledgeable peole here can help out.
 
For usefulness I would stick to not using VMs as you will effectively reduce the # of cores you have available for gaming/productivity.

I run dual smps and a gpu client and get full use of my computer. Set the GPU to pause and you can game on it. Not that I have gamed in ages... [H]eaven forbid I slow down my production!


The dual smps only work really well on solid overclocked q6600's (read 3.6Ghz), unless you plan to go to vista... Vista you can do the dual smps and gpu with little issue...


At least that is my experience.


 
Well, I won't have the computer here until Tuesday. Once that happens, I'll know what the situation is on the overclocking, though the person I bought it from said that it runs at 3.2, stock voltage, 40*C o air, so I'm optomistic about pushing it to 3.6-3.8 without too much trouble. I'll be adding the GPU after my next paycheck (week after recieving the tower.) Vista is an option in the future, but I'm going to be paying tuition soon, so I'm not sure how long it will be until I have the extra money to purchase a new OS.
 
from my zero experience... but reading all the guides, etc...

I think your best bet would be to run one instance of SMP and one GPU client.
that leaves 1 core for you to play with while surfing, etc... and with out greatly slowing downing things.

1 SMP client = 2200+- PPD
1 GPU2 client = 4800+- PPD

that alone could give you about 7000PPD with one machine, and put you up in to the top 100 or less of PPD producers
 
If you want to play around with VM's, try reading my guide Here.

One way to go is to run 1x VM, 1x Standard Console client and 1x GPU client.
It would be 500-600 PpD down vs running 2x VM's but your box will be more responsive.

Thanks for the info. I figured it would be a bit of guess and check, but this gives me a decent baseline to play with. Can't wait to get it and run.
