Finally found out why my machine is so unstable...

I've been having problems with this machine for months now and been too lazy to bother fixing it, assuming its just my windows install being full of junk. I previously had my 2.4 p4 o/c'd to 3.0 and my Sapphire 9800 n/p cranked up as far as it would go without noticable artifacts in 3dmark. At one point I set these both back to default when Rise of Nations kept crashing on me, and it solved the problem so I left them there.

Well last night I decided to crank it up again because f1 2002 was occasionally choppy when completely maxed out with fsaa. Well long story short, I pushed it a little too far and needed to open the case and reset the bios settings with the jumper. Booted it back up just to notice that the fan on my IC7's northbridge was dead. In the process of removing the fan an making sure it wasnt just rubbing on something, i came to realize that the fan on my 9800 was also dead! At idle in windows the heatsink on that sucker felt like it was going to melt.

I'm amazed the card is still alive since its probably been like that for months, and I've had it overclocked and played plenty of graphic intensive games. Amazingly its only recently that I noticed artifacts. As a precaution, I popped in my Geforce 2 Ultra for now... damn I've been spoiled by the ATI. All is good though, because I just ordered the monstrosity that is the Giant 3 by thermaltake along with the Thermalright northbridge cooler... but now I'm afraid I'll have to mod one of them to fit.

a nb and vc fan not going for months eh? you must have amazingly good air flow

I'm more surprised at the VC...those 9800's throw out a LOT of heat.

so haveing one of those blowers can come in handy after all(keeps the air moving around the vid card so it doesnt fry)

Its just a cheapo Ahanix case with a 120mm fan in front and a 92mm in back, i beleive. I usually have the fan speeds set to low too.

edit: oh and the NB cooler i ordered is the Thermalright NB-1. Before deciding to order this I didn't take into account that the Giant III video cooler will barely fit in there with the stock heatsink, so I'll probably have to break out the dremel when I go to put the NB-1 on.

Heh, you were lucky with your 9800 man. And ironically I had the fan die on my giant 2 without me noticing, and my 9700 is now shot to hell.
