Finally folding bigadv !!!

In an effort to get more points with less power, I picked up an i7-860, MSI P55-GD65, 8GB ADATA 1600 DDR3, and Thermalright cooler. After a night building and another night fumbling around to find a happy OC setting, I'm finally crunching a bigadv wu. TPF is around 36:00 at 3.62Ghz which computes to about 23K/ppd. I'm also GPU folding with 1x9800GT and 1x8800GT for a total around 33K/ppd. This pulls 400 watts from the wall but easily beats my old combo of Q6600 & 3x98/8800GT which used about 515 watts and only produced about 20K ppd. 13K ppd more using 100 less watts. Nice.

Big Adv is the way to go right now to reduce heat/electricity.

I am in the middle of building another i7 Big Adv rig as well. The points are definitely worth it.

Are you using a VM or native linux?

That's the whole reason I built Nexus. Its does over 1/2 my ppd while pulling 200 watts

23K for a 3.62 GHz proc pushing two video cards under Windows is pretty darn good. Nice little upgrade there!

So far, so good...TPF's have leveled off at 36:25 and HFM is computing the ppd at 22.7K. Total ppd for the farm is now just over 64K ppd with a good batch of GPU wu's. In a week or so, I should be getting back some spots on the PPD list.

More PpD for less Watts. It's the way to go. I'm jealous.

I have 8 GPU's folding and am having a hard time keeping a GTX260 and a GTX280 from downclocking on the 1010x projects (particularly 10107 & 10108) ... even at stock speeds on the GTX260. Would rather go for a couple i7's .. and then a couple more i7's and then maybe just one more i7 system in case I want to actually use my computer for something other than folding. I remember the days when gaming was priority one. I've got the bug.

If you've got the funds for a couple of i7s, then go for it. GPU folding is not what it used to be. The lambdas are killing it for a lot of people. I'm trying to keep the temps under 100 degrees on some of my cards, and it's only the beginning of spring. I'm thinking of imposing a moratorium on any new GPUs for this year unless something changes that makes it more favorable towards running them.

I ran the bigadv for a few frames at it was reporting mid 23K. That's not much of a sample but I'm just fine with it for only running at 3.62. It seems the GPU folding dropped that about 1000 so the penalty was not that great.

Here's the hardest thing. You tell yourself you'll turn off one of the older systems but you just can't...at least not yet. I connected the headless folder to the TV in the living room and told the family it was a HTPC. They thought I was brilliant and now I have a reason to keep it turned on and folding!
