Finally decided to do some w/c- Need feedback!!

I just upgraded from a 3 year old socket 478 to an Opteron 170 and 7800gt and hope this runs for at least two years. Anywho, I want to do some w/cing to hit 1.6v with the 170 to do some badass overclocking (plus it looks friggin' sweet)--and need some pointers in the right direction. I've got plenty of friends that have loops so I am not worried about the ease or hassle of w/cing since I can always learn.

Here are the things I'm considering
CPU block- Storm
GPU block- none yet (haven't oc'ed yet)
Rad- custom heater core, or store bought rad like a black ice or thermochill setup (looking to save money here). I plan on using at least 2x 120mm fans
Pump- Undecided, but MUST be silent
Res, tubing, etc.- Arcylic, 7/16 tygon, worm clamps

I am looking to keep everything 1/2"OD so that the tygon tubing will make a tight fit.

Now for the questions--about a *silent* affordable pump--Ive heard that the eheim 1046/1048/1250 are the quietest out there, but run on AC (110V) lines. Is it possible/easy to wire an AC relay switch to automatically turn on the pump when the computer system turns on or is there a way I can mod a pump like this to use a 12V molex? I am not looking to spend $110+ on a premodded version of a pump that sells for less than $50.

If the above isn't possible/reliable, then I don't have a problem spending $75 on a d5 or the swiftech equivalent, but saving money never hurt anyone. :)

So...I really would like some feedback on a good, reliable, silent pump with a high flow right since I may be adding more blocks to the loop in the future.Sorry if my ideas are poorly presented or scrambled, I need a make a trip to Starbucks!

these days, the black ice pro 2 has become pretty cheap.......don't know how much you will be able to save by getting a heater core, once you have finished modding the thing.

as for how to control a pump: either homebrew with a relay or get something like the criticool powerplant or the asetek pump controller.

after shelling out for an eheim and a pre-fab controller, though, i think that you will come out to about the price of the D5. you could probably still come out ahead if your DIY, howeveri don't think it will be by a whole lot if yo stick with the quiet but expensive eheim units.

i honestly think that the GPU is where you can get some of the best cooling/noise improvements as compared to aftermarket air cooling, even running stock speeds.

If you aren't cooling the GPU (we'll talk about that in a moment) then a BIX with a single 120mm fan will do just fine.

Before making any decisions about your loop I'd recommend you run it stock and see exactly what needs to be done.
I'm guessing that your GPU will be the hottest component, closely followed by the northbridge chip (you didn't mention what board you have).

My GPU idles at 48C w/ stock HSF (still don't know whether or not I will overclock it). Also, not sure if adding the chipset into the equation will be of much benefit--sounds like it would just add heat to the loop. Btw, I'm using a DFI LP Nf4 Ultra-D.

What are the best radiators on the market? I've been out of the loop (no pun  )
thermochill PA series rads. you have to pay extra in order to get the best, though.

excellent cooling with quiet fans.......even if they are thick as hell.

just by the by: you are likely going to hear that GPU cooler over even a relatively loud watercooling pump. you could move to something much cheaper than the eheim, and it will still not be the loudest component in your system.

Yes the Thermochill PA is the best around I run one in my rig. Its the 120.3 (120 x 3 fans each side.) Anyhow. There is lots out there. In my loop i cool 2 vid cards and a CPU using the DD TDX for the CPU, The dual Maze4 GPU coolers and the New improved D4 pump with a Aquacomputer Resivour. Works great.

Hmm, even the most expensive eheim pump that's realistic in water cooling is the 1250 @ $65-80, which is not too far off from the DD D5 pump. Also, I still would like to know how I can convert one to use a 12v molex, or somehow wire a switch to turn it on when the PSU is turned on?

I would just say get the pump from DD as it is setup allready for 12v action no moding or anything needed no addition parts ect. no addition expense. It also performs quit well in fact as good as the pumps you mention and its plenty quiet and is even tunable with built in adjustment for noise and flow control. Plus they are pretty decent looking and not very large.

just to clairify for the OP, but i'm pretty sure that you are talking about the D5 pump, not the eheim.

i already addressed this, although perhaps i was not entirely clear.

you can use a relay with a 12 volt coil, that is rated to control a few amps of 120 VAC current on the power terminals. just wire the control terminals to one of the 12 volt outputs of your PSU and the output terminals in line with your 120 VAC pump.

it's pretty easy to set up.

alternately, there are companies that have prefab units that do the same thing, without you havig to wire components yourself.

Yes thats correct The D5 is what i am talking about. Even the D4 was a good pump. only noise issues i ever saw was if their was a restriction in the loop like a block or running with smaller then half inch tubing or something of that nature and it would whine a lil. But that is different with D5 as it is almost same pump but adjustable to fix the noise issues if any arrise for such reasons i had stated. With the Ehiem stuff he will have to either make a controller that will turn it on with the system or buy one pre made. they are out there but why. when he could just get a good 12v pump with molex built in like the D5. make simple..
