finally, buildning new computer

Hi, this is my first post at [H]Forums, just got registred

Anyway.. Im building me a new system. Im sick of my old tb 1.2 ghz and gf2.. bla..bla (see sig)..

i've been lurking this forum for a couple of weeks and this is the comp i came up with..

cpu: amd64 754 newcastle 3400+
mobo: MSI MS-K8N-NEO-PLATINUM nForce3
mem: 2x 512Mb Kingmax PC3200/DDR400 CL2.5 superRAM
hdd: 2x seagate 7200.7 160 gb sata (storage), 1x 36gb raptor (os/apps)
gfx: geforce 6800GT 256mb (PNY or Aopen)
sound: Audigy 2 PCI
Psu: Antec true power 480watt
monitor: Samsung 19" 957MB
mouse/keyb: Logitech Cordless optical desktop MX
dvd: Plextor PX-712A (burner), Asus 16x/48x (reader)
cpu fan: Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU
+other not so important accessories..

I will probably buy this in 2-3 weeks timeframe.

As for the gfx what vendor should i go with, pny or aopen? i got no experience with any of them. my current gf2 is msi.

I know amd64 have trouble with some memory, what about kingmax?

Btw, the msi mobo is currently one of the best out there, right?!

Your best bet is eVGA or BFG, a lot of guys here have those two brands and all i hear is good things, especially with BFG. eVGA also has a trade up program, check it out, eventually you could get the Ultra

I would also recommend a 939 based system rather than a 754, itll be easy to upgrade in the future, you could just drop a new proc in. 754 looks like its comming to an end after the 3700+

Yeah, but 754 is cheaper now... and next time you upgrade your processor you might find yourself wanted a nice new PCI Express graphics card to go with it... and then you'll need a new mobo anyways.

I say stick with the 754. You'll save money in the now, and you probably won't do a CPU upgrade without a mobo upgrade anyways.

Oh, I'd also recommend a different monitor... maybe an aperture grill like the Diamondtron or Trinitron tubes.

Looks pretty good.

eVGA, PNY, and BFG should be fine, so get which ever is cheaper.

As with 754 pin, the diffrence between a 3400+ and a 3500+ is'nt too much in most applications.

The keyboard and mouse i will assume you have looked at, and like the way they look/feel.

Ive never used that monitor, but from the specs it looks like a good one. As to what SSmith said, its going to be hard to find the Trinitron monitors because Sony has stoped producing CRT monitors for the general public (i will assume most people don't want to buy a 1800$US CRT monitor).

Everything else looks good to me. Should be an awsome computer!

I rather buy 939 when pci-e hits the street and all the bugs are sorted out. Besides there are currently not a lot off 939 mobos to chose from (correct me if im wrong).

i know s754 had alot of memory compitability issues at the beginning. is this the deal with s939 too?

the samsung has gotten really nice reviews in magazines. It has good price value too. about $200

A friend got the mx mouse. i love it, its so responsive!

im sorry, what do you mean? if your asking if this is my first custom built comp, its not. i've built a couple of them in the past

i know plextor is a bit expensive, but its also top of the line. i will consider the nec tho.

1) id opt for a socket 939 based system, as said before itll be better for upgrading.
2) doesnt that board allready have onboard audio? why the need for a second audio card?
3) hitachi 160gb drives are much cheaper than the seagate ones from newegg.
4) liteon has much cheaper drives than plextor.
5) with the money you save you could upgrade the 6800gt to the 6800 ultra

Maybe i will go with socket 939 instead. im thinking about it. the 3500+ is only ~$100 more so ..well..hmm

how is the memory compitabillity with this socket? is there alot of bugs or are the most sorted out?

I got one more question. what mobo would you recommend for 939? im looking at the msi neo2 nforce3, but i would like your thoughts on it.

acascianelli, as for the audio i already have the audigy2 laying around and i guess its better than the onboard so im putting it in. the seagate are cheaper here in sweden. im not buying from newegg..

First off, congrats on your new computer. I'm sure its going to be sexy . What are you planning on doing with the 36GB drive? I'm kind of new at this but is it possible to store the OS on that drive? And what would be the benefit of doing so?

Well the os would feel more fast/responsive and it would reduce startup time

edit: if you keep the os/pagefile on its own drive it well get less fragmented.

yes, the OS would be on the smaller, faster drive

and the 160gb drive would be for storage

the 36 gig is a raptor, they are 10,000 rpm instead of 7200 they are much faster... but more expensive too...

you can run win xp on a 4 gig drive, possibly smaller... i used to run win95 on an 80 gig drive.. so yeah. you can run an OS in 80 gigs...

umm... to the original poster... the 74 gig raptors are supposedly even a little bit faster so maybe you should look into that since you already are spending quite a bit of money on this computer...

scottatwittenberg, i have to put the limit somewhere.. i dont really need it to be any faster. it would just be overkill in my opinion.
