Well I was talking absolute gpu performance and not model steps. So I was thinking cards less than the 9600GT would be 8600GTS and below. I definitely think all the 8800 series will be fast enough. I'd say the 8800GTS 320, as I've seen some for <100, might be a winner here as I don't think card memory is a big factor, guess we'll have to see. :)

nvidia's card lineup sucks in terms of model and overall performance since the 8800GT and GTS512 are faster than the 9600GT and the 9800GTX is barely faster than the GTS512. Then you've got the low volume 8800GS that turned into the 9600GSO... *sigh*

I think this will be limited to 8800's and up.Too bad as I have many many NVVDA cards here in the house not doing anything.We have two GTS 640's a 8800GS and a 9600GT
ready to go when this client hits.Not to mention the GTX 280 I will have this July.

I like the look of the leaked Ed Day pic's,the client looks neat.

Yeah, that's also why I said to be careful with the statement. The model line is so damn confusing that everyone will be lost in the spaghetti :p

A easier one to say is that anything below a 8800GT isn't enough (there is no 9xxx which perform much lower than a 8800GT so it's a safer statement to make).

THAT is the million dollar question, anyone remember the time lapse between the original gpu client announcement and when it actually showed up? Course i haven't seen a timeline or anything from stanford, they're the only ones that really know.
 
I didn't even see any word in the blog or FCF or even any beta testing request so I can say it might be a few months before we see a real client in action. At least, this announcement will show they are already working on the client right now because in the past, it's always speculations and hearsay about why it is taking a lot of time and the supposed compatibility issues.

 
Nice! I hope they get the client going soon. I've saved enough for the new GTX280 as soon as it comes out.

You know how Nvidia is doing that contest for people to optimized the MP3 encoding app using their GPU's? They should have done a contest for this instead or also.

I know it's been said, and a bad joke retaliation in it's place, but it's about damn time. Sure would be nice if they could get it out at/near the GTX2x0 release, though that's not likely to happen given no word of betas even yet.

And no for anyone that has thought of it already - a SINGLE quad, running dual SMP will not support either single or dual GPU clients. Unless Stanford pulls some mighty big strings in the programming dept., it would have to be 1 CPU core for each GPU client, just like the ATIGPU client, no? IOW - 1xSMP, 1-2 GPU clients -- unless you're on the Skulltrail platform of course.

Sure would be nice to see what kind of gains (or not) that I could expect to see w/ single SMP + single GPU vs. current dual SMP setup (given that 2665 WUs [and worse ie: 305x/6x?] are likely to become the norm + 2653s may not last all that much longer).

Random thought.. Perhaps this GPU folding announcement is one of the things that 7im alluded to in the " 2665's suck and up yours 7im for being a Stanford [insert derogatory term]!" thread?

For fecks sake Stanford, hurry it up and release it already, you've been pissing off many of your hardcore supporters w/ the huge variations in points values + folding needs on more recent WUs... Releasing the new client would sure help you out in the PR department (as long as it doesn't totally suck!).

Anybody else notice the "based on an upcoming GPU" (ie: GTX280 of course) comment, and how it's even faster than the PS3 client? Sounds like we could have a crap load of happy folders if Stanford does this right. Granted there's a ton of G8x/G9x potential folders, but hopefully the ppw/pd ratio will scale decently downward for those of us without the plastic to upgrade solely for a folding client.

My optimistic side says that since F@H already has architectural extensions for GPU based computing (on ATi), adding CUDA to that will be easy - and from the slides it seems they already have an idea what results they'll get using the G200 based cards.

My realistic side will wait for a download link.

I'm still tuning my sig machine - trying to get cool enough for 4.2GHz stable, and adjust the case a bit to fit dual-slot graphics cards. My neighbor has the PCIe risers that got delivered while I was in Tokyo, so maybe this weekend. Really, it is a portable gaming machine, but I think it could fold when I'm not fragging - though lately it doesn't do much except run Prime95 to check stability at various settings LoL

Aliens and zombies are a race. Pirating and ninja arts are an occupation so:

Pirate Ninja Aliens > Ninja Aliens > Pirate Aliens > Aliens > Zombie Aliens > Zombies

We are only partially prepared for zombies. It's entirely possible we could get pwnd by pirate ninja aliens and be fvcked 8x worse.
 
I would think pirates and ninjas are mutually exclusive. How can one be silent/stealthy and loud/obscene at the same time? And besides, we all know Vikings rule all.

I did a little looking around hoping I might see some more speculation about this over on the folding forum policed by the 7im gestapo. I find it odd nothing is mentioned about this over there that I can see. I also didn't see anything on VJ's blog. If it were not for my seeing pics I would be calling shens.

 
Nice way to bump up selling new video cards to all the kids that burn out theirs by running this software on it.

I think I remeber hearing somethign about this quite a while ago on either the Nvidia site or on their forums.

I figured it wouldn't be too long since they have CUDA.

From my understanding, it will work on any card that supports CUDA.
