hi, just need a last bit of advise. more of re-assurance!

so far ive bought

cpu: qx6700
ram: 4 GB OCZ pc2 8500 1066mhz sli ready edition
psu: seasonic 700w m12 modular
harddrive: raptor x 150gb
graphics: evga 1gb 7950gx2

buying tonight,

case: mzxt rogue

also fit my psu in it. and stick in a 8800gt.

The parts for my lanbox (VF6000BNS, but the interior is the same as the one you're getting) build come in tomorrow. I had found here that the max HSF height is ~100mm. If that is true, that Scythe cooler is too tall.
 
minor quibbles.

Get a Q6600 instead and overclock. Save some $.

Ditch the Raptor and get a 750GB Seagate or something like it. 5 times more capacity and not much slower.

Oops missed the part where you already bought those components....oh snap.
 
yeah ive aleady bought them.

not much i can do now :) i got them fairly cheap anyway so its no hassle.

having problems finding the lcd screen now :(

ireland doesnt have a great selection of components :(

and the brown pcb looks much in the window...

I owned the FI-90HD and it ran, mostly, for 4 months until it died. Reliability has been a major issue with that board, it wasn't just me.

What OS are you using? XP only supports 3gb max of RAM.

I love Raptors and use them on all systems I build now. Want storage? That's what a second drive is for!

I've built two systems now with the P5K-VM, seems like a decent mobo to me.

7" LCD - if you're into that. Doesn't make it go faster. ;)
 
It should run your RAM just fine, it just won't allow it to run faster than DDR800.

I have the same board and was using 2x1GB OCZ PC8000 gold.

I could run it at DDr800 speed and 4-4-4-10 timings.
 
i think im gonna stick with the p5k g33 board.
more options with the ram.

and as u said pclark, its not the most reliable board. not the first time ive heard that either.

the 7" screen is more of a luxury really. its purely a gaming rig.
and since im having problems finding the screen now, i think ill skip it, and build whats there.

if i find the screen later on, ill buy it and throw it in when ever needed.

and i agree with you on the raptor x, its amazing and since i only paid $120 for it, i cant go wrong
 
I have the Asus board too, it is better than the abit.

Some people have had the abit boards die, so far I have been lucky and not had any issues.
 
How long is it? If its only 9.6" or less, it'll easily fit.

*Better looking for sure (buy some red cathodes, wrap them in red cellophane to darken the colour), but as heavy as the aluminium version with all the components already inside. Not a problem if you can lift weight and carry it (with agility so as not to tear down a wall).

picked the qx6700 up for the same price as the q6600. so cant argue there.

picked the ram up off a friend who was selling his rig as he needed to build a nursery so got it cheap aswel.

same with the raptor x.

the graphics card i had for a long time and im just waiting to see what comes out next before i upgrade, dont think thats a bad idea really.

the lanbox, looks great, and im happy to go with it.

didnt get a heat sink with the qx6700 :) so i need to get one! im open to suggestions as the scythe doesnt appear to fit! or so i read.

and also got the power supply off my friend. he paid 120 euro, and i got it for 60 so why not!

im open to critisim here! and thanks for the suggestions. some parts i already have so no point in letting them sit there.

as for the red cathode idea, think ill try that. good idea on reducing their glare aswel. :)

final questions are....

anyone see any thing wrong with the build.. ive been dreaming of building this for so long and finally got the time off work to get it done!

so im ordering it soon and just wondering if there was anything i should change or upgrade etc...

QX6700 is overkill. An overclocked Q6600 would do the job, although I wouldn't even run a 65nm quad in a mATX setup, just because most cases (especially the Lanbox) can't fit a cooler good enough to adequately cool a quad. Maybe the 45nm Penryn's will be much cooler, but they're not going to be out for some time.

DDR2-1066 is overkill unless you really need to overclock past 400FSB (assuming you use 1:1 divider). Considering you picked a Q6700, I would have figured you'd rely more on the unlocked multiplyer than on a higher FSB. Those RAM sticks are good RAM, they should have Micron D9's in them.

700W PSU is overkill. Only need that much if you're running SLI and a lot of ther components. Being a 700W PSU, it's going to be longer than 400-500 watt power supplies, which is going to take up more space and possibly decrease airflow and increase temps. You might also find it bumping into your optical drives.

Your 7950GX2 should fit. It's about 8800GTS length from what I've read.

That CPU cooler won't fit in your Lanbox. You're either going to have to get a new one or use the stock cooler.

EDIT: Ok, I see you got everything cheaper...I'd still recommend getting a smaller PSU...and I'd recommend saving that quad for a full ATX build because there isn't much that can fit in a Lanbox and adequately cool it at the same time. If you want better cooling solutions, you might want to go for the Qmicra or the NZXT Rogue. Those cases are slightly larger and will accomodate the bigger PSU and hotter CPU.
 
Now if its all second hand and low priced... that's a steal, no? $120 for a Seasonic is excellent.

Has anybody ever tried a quad with the stock cooler?
 
right. ive given up on using the lanbox. instead im getting a nzxt rogue OR the nzxt lexa.

if i go with the lexa, then ive no worries and can stick anything in it with watercooling if need be.

but i want to go sff. so might go with the rogue.
its got more room to play with than the lanbox and more options for a cooler.

the qx6700 and ram might be overkill, but its a steal price, and lots of overclock abilities.
