So I can get a used 7970 for 375, or a new 770 4GB for 400.

What is the better option for pure gaming?
 
New is always good.:D

Performance is probably very similar.
 
Yeah, I'd go for the new GTX 770 4GB since its:

1. NEW ( warranty > no warranty)
2. 4GB > 3GB ( esp. for $25 difference )
3. imo smoother gameplay ( nvidia to me seems to be a better gaming experience )
