I know its an older game now... but Im a big fan of the FF series... and was wondering if FF 11 was any good... I pretty much got sick of MMORPG games when i played everquest... click click click hack slash i hated it...

is the battle system like any other final fantasy? Menu Turned based? or is it click click click etc.

I really enjoyed it, however when I first played it all the servers were in japan, so it could be slow.

I really liked the combat system in it and chaining attacks.

FFXI is basically EQ with all the FF series staples (moogles, chocobos, jobs, etc...). This game is very much a clicky grindfest. I played it for eight months and quit in disgust. The economy is suffering from hyper-inflation and buying Gil online is a must. There is also no soloing what-so-ever past level eight or so.

Your money is better spent elsewhere...

No, it is one of the wost MMOs out there. I have posted a few times about it... let me see if I can find the posts.

Edit: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1046287&highlight=FFXI

Read that thread for some insight. The game sucks, just skip it. Americans and Europeans are the only ones who know how to make MMOs worth a damn IMO. Asians tends to focus on long grindfests with minimal content.

If it is anything like the previous Final Fantasy games, it's bound to be crap.

I play religiously. My gaming rig is pretty much just a FFXI terminal now.

It's slow. Much of the gameplay is designed around party play, and parties have specific setups that work better than others, and if you are playing a job that is not currently needed, you will sit around and wait for a party to form, or try to form your own. Certain jobs, like Dragoon, are pretty much the butt of jokes about jobs that have a hard time getting parties.

It's also designed to be just time-consuming to do ANYTHING. Quests and missions have all kinds of running around involved, many of the transportation options are not very fast or efficient, and some missions and quests require items that are rare drops and everyone needs to get one and oh jeez it can just take forever. Even crafting can be a time sink. Anything you do will take many times longer than you plan it to.

Chinese gold farmers (in FFXI we call them RMT) have caused all kinds of economy problems, monopolize ANY mob with any drop worth any money, and are just bad, bad players. They are also EVERYWHERE.

If the annoying Chinese weren't bad enough, FFXI has a large, very xenophobic Japanese crowd. Many of them absolutely loathe any non-Japanese player and will avoid them at all costs. It sucks when the one person seeking for a party on the one job your party needs has "JP ONLY" in his search comment. To be fair, my favorite FFXI buddy currently is a Japanese player who is very open to playing with english speakers although her english is not very good. I even visited her in Japan earlier this month.

The number of pure stupid players compared to say, WoW, is fairly low.

I do like the "any job" idea. You can change to any job in most of the cities and do all kinds of different things. Be a warrior today, be a mage tomorrow. It really is better than just grinding on one job.

The endgame is really one big e-penis waving contest. People get their super cool rare gear and flaunt it even tho it has crappy stats. Meh, I avoid that stuff. I just try to make friends, refine my character, and have fun.

It was fun for a short while, then realized I wasted 50 hours and was NO WHERE (beginning still) I was like...I could have beaten a console version of this game already.

I did have fun on my last days running around and just yelling how this game sucks and no wonder WoW is way more popular. Needless to say, that pissed them of BIG time :D

Oh I hate WoW too.

It's a super grind fest. Worse than the original EQ without the sense of wonder and newness.

I played for a few months, couldn't handle it. For a while, you could tell what level people were by what armor they wore. The economy's super inflated.

If FF11 were called... Ultima Online 2, it wouldn't be running today. The only reason people play it is because its a FF game, and the only reason a lot of people like it, is because they forced themself to because its an FF game.

I saw some high end stuff being played at a party once, and it looked interesting. No 10 people AFK in a 40 man raid to collect epix going on. Then, I saw:

Clouda"Arigato, minna-san. Watashi wa blah blah ^_______^'"
Cloudaa"insert japanese dialogue here"
Aerithy"insert more japanese dialogue here"
Rinoangel"Wo ai Sephy-chan!"
Reekuuuu"OMG SEPHY-CHAN KAWAIIIIIIIIIII!!! ^____________________^'"

And I go, "Oh, cool. So you guys are playing with Japanese players"
"No. That's steve over there."
"Oh... so who's..."
"Hey, Aerithy, stop downloading Trigun off bit torrent, you're lagging us."
"Dude, its not me, Rinoangel, is it you?"

The hardcore otaku crowd tends to irk me... so, finding people to play FFxi with was a chore. That, and well, I'm not Japanese, so that excluded me from 50% of the parties.

There are alot of bad opinions on the game. For $20 buy it and play the free month and see what you think. I have been playing since July. I enjoy it. I have a great Linkshell a group of people that I play with and we enjoy playing. There is soloing but it is very cumbersome and only one job class can do it easily. Just try it and see what you think!

You're better off getting FFXII (if you don't already have it). It's everything FFXI wasn't or ever will be. I'm currently playing FFXII and it totally reminds me of FFXI, but way better. :D

An enthusiastic NO!

Though I love the final fantasy series of games, this game was awful

WoW is a much better game, play FFXI first then WoW and see what I mean.

I loved every minute of playing it and I had over 260 days logged.

It's a lot more about making good friends and keeping in touch and partying with them to level up often.

I was a 75 summoner, 69 Black Mage, 40 White Mage, 37 Corsair, and a bunch of random lower stuff when I quit because of time constraints.

I LOVED the game, I made a lot of good friends playing it, but I don't have the time, and for what I was using it for (basically became an expensive AIM with 3D models) I couldn't justify the monthly fee. Plus I had just purchased FFXII, Okami, and I got my Wii and 360 lately so I REALLY didn't have time to play.

I was in a few high end game linkshells and I had fun and got the gear but got sick of trying to acquire gil. So I sold my 76mil for some 250$ back in the day that was a pretty good deal, today it would have netted me about 1400$.

I quit last december for a few months, then came back to try the new expansion jobs and stuff and got the complete hookup from my friends. I got my old character back from the guy who bought it for just a tad more than I sold it for, sold all that stuff, hooked up my new guy more. I was at a point where I had the best gear for COR until most of the mid 50's and then in the later 73/74/75 I'd have to replace a bit, but I could pick up and down the game on my own time, but waiting for parties got lame.

I was good at the game, I knew how it worked, I made friends, I did the whole end game HNM/Dynamis/Limbus/etc.. thing, finished the stories (except the most recent expansion) and still continued to play. A few weeks ago I canceled my accounts permanently because I really enjoy my new consoles and new games there and can pick up and put down those games and always get something done isntead of waiting for others to play with me because you have to have 6 people to go level up.

The game only really gets truely fun after you've passed through the devilish 'Dunes' and the 'Queef'; officially named Valkurm Dunes and Qufim Island which are levels like 10-24. After that you get to explore a lot more and then at 50/60 you get your AF which is REALLY cool, in between you can start up a craft or something and do some light PVP, but mostly it's just a leveling game until the end. Level pretty much dictates everything you can do and soloing is out of the question unless you're a Beastmaster (BST) or I think some Puppet Masters (PUP) can do it pretty well too.

I liked it, but it had it's quirks. I really didn't like WoW, it feels too cartoony for me to even play seriously, and I almost felt I had too many options at some times, like there was an overwhelming amount of stuff to do. I also didn't like Oblivion or Morrowind so it's all your own play style. If you need something to fill your time and you like to grind, FFXI is a good choice, unless you have friends that play WoW (I do and still didn't like it), then WoW might be a better choice.

I'd say more, there's really a lot to say about this game, mostly positive, but it's not worth it to type so much in my opinion and I've probably already said too much.

The combat system in FFXI is my favorite out of all the mmorpgs i've played. It actually took some skill/coordination/intelligent team members to pull off chains and get a good flow of exp going. It wasn't just everyone mashing their power moves and doing their own thing, people worked together, and you were only as good as each member in your team. While i'll agree that WoW is a better designed game in most regards, i wish they would have took a note from FFXI on this one. A good FFXI party was a lot more rewarding than any party in WoW.

ps. sorry if this is becoming a FFXI vs WoW thread, but since it's so vastly popular i thought the need to make the comparison.

What server were you on? I was on Midgardsormr. I love the FFXI combat, the way it's played is really fun and when you get a good set of macro's and you get used to it you become a great asset to any party, it's great fun to me to tweak around for stuff but lack of time has made me cancel.

I REALLY liked FFXI, seriously an amazing game and the graphics were great, and you could tweak the textures to load as 2048x2048 instead of their max of 512x512 in the original game config program so I had a very pretty well running FFXI experience.

Hey OP, what turned you to FFXI to ask here about it? I find you can't tell anything about a game unless you try it yourself. I can hook you up with a link to a download of the client and a demo key probably if you would like one.

Is there some kind of playable demo out there? I looked around a bit and all I found was a benchmark demo?

it's an MMORPG so no there is no playable demo. You can however download the client using a special password given to anyone who has bought the retail box, so I have a code to download the client, and from there you can create an account and play for like 10 days to a month or somewhere in between.

That isn't enough time to get anywhere in the game though really. You might acquire level 10-15 in that time if you really really try the game as if it were a full time game.

hey me too, i was femtos.

anyways, after logging over 400 days on ffxi, i have to tell you, DO NOT play it. it has its fun moments, but id have to say about 90% of the game was literally either spent trying to make enough gil to buy ridiculously inflated priced equipment, waiting for a party so i could level, or waiting for a hyper notorious monster to spawn. get this, a hyper notorious monster spawns every 24 hours. and it gets even better, it spawns within 3 hours of it last dying. so if you like staring at a screen spamming keys to get rights to fight the monster over literally dozens of other players for 3 hours everyday for a stupid virtual rare drop, then maybe you can like ffxi. for me, once i realized my awesome gear was virtual and practically worthless, i quit asap and havent looked back since.

Does Ampidire or Ampinista mean anything to you? I remember you I think.

i liked it, however i enjoy leveling up and trying new stuff. not like the majority of people. WoW for example everyone rushes to 60 and does the same instances over and over and over again, jus tlike all MMOs

but ffxi kept me entertained longer, i dont play any mmos as of now, havent for a good chunk of time.

the battle system is slightly more complicated then the traditional FF series

Theres a hate system, much more complex than offline FF games. My favorite part was the team aspect, things to time coordinate and so on.

But the game takes a bit to pickup, but i enjoyed it alot- my fav mmo prob

taru 75smn 69blm 40whm.

ampinista was a 36cor when i gave him up, he was my expansion char basically after giving up on trying to do anything with ampidire that would get me hassled about hnm and shit all the time...

nice, i must've lvled with you on my 68war. 75drk/40nin. i absolutely hated how you had to have specific jobs to do anything in the game, like i wouldnt be complaining if it was just whm, but you also needed a pld or nin and rdm or smn and it was just ridiculous.

sweet yeah, that's what i remember.

Crazy to see someone from ffxi on my server here...

yeah, well i liked the way the jobs worked together, and you could get some pretty awesome setups with unconventional jobs in your parties. with the expansion some crazy blu/cor burn stuff was goin' on, that was cool.

I've been playing FFXI for just over 2 years now. I'm not an "avid" player, but I do tend to put in 5-10 hours a week or so.

FFXI is, in a word, enormous. Its a challenging game that isnt for the instant gratification type. I played WoW for almost 4 months at about 10-15 hours a week and by the end of those 4 months, was already level 60. In FFXI however, it took over a year and a half of casual playing to level my Paladin (Sylph server) up to level 75. Is that a bad thing? No! Just a totally different way to play. Each skill or level increase, no matter how small, is an accomplishment in this game.

As a casual gamer, this game has endless possibilities. You can switch jobs (such as Warrior, Ranger, Mage, Summoner, etc) at any time and get a feel for what its like to play each (of the 18 possible jobs) one using your same character! There are a total of 6 different complete mission storylines each with multiple missions to accomplish the entire thing.

- Battle system: one of the most versitile and challenging
- Countless quests in each major area
- Assault missions: gather up a small army and attack enemy fortresses for rewards
- Ballista: PVP!
- Beseiged / Garrison: protect a large town / outpost agasint a swarm of NM's, usually takes about 400 people to win in the town!
- Crafting
- Dynamis: High level area to collect pieces of relic and artifact equipment

Needless to say, after 2 years, im still looking forward to another 2 years of playing. Like I said above, this is a challenging game and if you are the type that likes easy RPG's or like to plow through a game, then FFXI is not for you.

Now that i'm done soundling like a representative from Square, haha, I'll be glad to give anyone who's interested a world pass (so that we can play on the same server).

I was on Seraph, hmn 40rng/20nin with some war/thf on the side to make some money. Man, that guy could pump out some damage but was so friggen expensive! I quit a couple months before they came out with pvp which was probably like 3 years ago. How did that ever turn out anyways?

yeah RNG is expensive, COR is even more so too because you make up for lack of RACC with like Peacock Charm and Gun Belt and stuff which runs a total of like 15mil give or take...

Yeah umm, the PvP never really caught on to me until I seriously gave it a try it's awesome. I didn't like PvP as a mage but as a melee and on COR it was a lot of fun. I definitely played the game completely differently the 2nd time around on my COR and I had a blast doing it but still didn't have the time to cover it while being in college...

I have FFXII, Okami, Gears of War, and Zelda:TP all brand new and waiting for me to play and beat them (well I beat GoW last night and I'm 15 hours into FFXII, and 6 hours into Zelda... but yeah). They're all great games that will fill the void nicely but I do miss being online with the guys I've known since before it was released in Japan.

I played FFXI imported from Japan on Ragnarok server, and then I was in the U.S. Beta release and then I played from release in the US until just about a month ago with a 4-5 month break at the beginning of this year for lack of time and need to kick up my grades a notch to get into this college I'm sitting in right now.

I played on Quetzalcoatl for like 5 months then quit, came back a year later for about 4 months then quit. Aren't I dedicated?

Been trying to go through Rhapsodies of Vana'diel recently, and holy shit if you didn't do Seekers of Adoulin there is a lot of catching up to do by chapter 3. Just getting the survival skills needed for a cutscene is taking several hours.

Yep. You got a shit load of things to do to catch up. What server are you on?

I joined Asura before they closed it down to new characters. I created a new account in 2021 since it was easier than trying to revive my original account, which was on Titan/Phoenix. Had not touched it since 2008-2009.

I still have my original account from 2003ish. I started playing in 2022 again after like 5 years. Haven't played since 2023. I duo'dRoV with a friend that was still around when I came back. Barely started Voracious Resurgence when I came back. I still get the itch to play all the time but I don't have the energy to commit so much time now. Feels like I am even farther behind if I came back now then when I came back on 2022

Thief is iLvl 117 with around 30 merit points and 5 job points, I think. Dancer and Dark Knight are 70. Ninja, Warrior, and Samurai all 55 currently. Mages are all 28. Blue Mage is annoying because learning a blue magic isn't guaranteed even with Blue Magic skill capped for your level. Never got that far in Aht Urghan even though I bought it on release day. Want to try Rune Fencer or Scholar next. Finally finished all the beginner records of eminence goals recently. Wildskeeper Reive was a PITA since the mob had as much HP as an apex mob. Picking at the intermediate records now. The Kupons are helpful in getting your item level up to snuff without breaking the bank.

Wild keeper Reives were designed for mass groups to take down. I doubt there many people doing it nowadays. I got all jobs capped at 99 and full merits. Only got COR mastered. BLM was my main to get into end game LS back in the day when kings were a thing. RNG and COR became my mains later on. Man I am getting the itch bad from this post.
