im planning to buy 80mm fans for my case, but i hear you hafta get filters too? are they for air coming into the case or out? what do they filter? do u have to have one? thanks

You dont have to get filters. You would just want them if you dont want to clean the inside of your case as often. You would want filters for the air coming into your case.

A reason why you wouldnt want an air filter is because it restricts the airflow a bit. If you're concerned about having your case heating up too much, I would forget about the filters. Also filters make your fans louder while they are restricting the airflow. ...Just something to think about.

filters are only necessery for intake fans. you dont HAVE to have them but i recomend them for the fact that you dont want stuff like say, cat hair blowing around in your case

i baught filters for my fans, they work great my case is nice and clean with them in, before it was dust city :D they arn't mandatory, but they are very good to have, expecialy if u dont want a dirty ass case.

Simply Filters Are For Intake To Keep The Dust Particles Out. It Keeps Your Case Cleaner And Running A Lot Better.

As For Quietness I Have Filters On All Of My Fans And I Dont Hear A Difference.

They Need To Come Up With Sented Filters HmMmMm Bubble Gum

I used some 3M FIltrete air-con filter on all my intakes, it didn't make a difference to my temps, but it does keep my casing MUCH cleaner inside. :D

Air flow obstruction and noise increase with filters in place are both minimal.

Filters go on intake fans to keep dust from getting inside. However, it is also important to consider the overall air pressure of the case. If you have more CFMs of air being exhausted than you do coming in, air (and dust that floats around in the air) will be pulled in through all the cracks and holes in your case.

To keep out as much dust as possible, filter all your intake fans and keep the air pressure inside the case positive.

This is a common myth.

In reality, those fans you use for your system are far too weak to produce anything close to a negative or positive airpressure inside the case. If you've more air being blow into the case than the exhaust fans can move normally, then the slight increase in airpressure will simply cause them to spin faster, and the intake fans slower. Similarly, attempts to create negative airpressure using the exhaust fans will cause them to spin slower, and the intake fans faster.

In other words, it is physically impossible to create anything more than a minor under- or overpressure with mere fans.

Air filters, however, are far from being a myth, and should always be used :)

You don't have to use filters, but if you don't you should vaccuum out your case about once a month or so. If you have pets that shed a lot or your PC is on the ground, you should get filters.

Filters really aren't anything of a problem. You can make filters from some household items, actually.

I've always used filters, when I got my new case I used some Aircon mesh, worked fine. And now I have 3 of these http://www.svc.com/80mesh-blk.html . They work awesome, look good, and are super easy to clean with a Dust Buster or a vacuum. It surely beats cleaning out my computer every 2 weeks(I am a neat freak with my computer). Sure they may restrict airflow a bit, but its a small price to pay to keeping your system clean.

I am guessing the wierd plastic "filter" that comes with Li-Li cases isn't much good?
See below:

Maybe it's time to get some old tights.

I don't know about you, but I don't think I would want to use old tights. New ones are like 20 cents(for the cheapest ones).

panty hose was popular...

havent seen many people using filters lately actually

I Have Wire Fan Filters That Came With My ThermalTake Xaser III Case. They Work Pretty Good. I Dont Ever Have To Buy New Ones Because There Not Cloth And Dont Wear Out. Only Clean Them Every Week.

Yeah especially if they're off a chick you picked up at the bar while you had the "Beer Goggles" on

Better to get a clean pair ;)

Damn I read through this entire thread and the question I wanted to answer is at the end. YES, pantyhose are good filters. But dont get fishnet or anything fancy, just regular pantyhose (I know nothing about pantyhose, except how to get them off) I think the "basic" pantyhose is the way to go, just get the BIG FAT LADY size and you will have enough for at least a year. Cut to size and your set.

----> just asked sister, their about $3.29, so get the big ones for more use.

Is panty hose a good filter though?

The nylon in panty hose work great - I use it to replace the foam in three piece filters. Having a wife and three daughter, my supply of nylons is good :). It works best stretched around a frame, but I have wraped it snugly around intake fans before - gotta keep it tight or it could get caught in the fan -> Speaking from experience... heh. wrrrrrrrrrrrrrr - flunk - wochita-wochita-wochita -> timmeh buys a new intake fan....

Peace,
Tim
