I am applying for an internal job and this is one of the requirements. What do you guys make of it? I don't even know what they're asking exactly. I over qualify for every other aspect of the job though.

"Please note, not all file systems are file based and therefore candidate should demonstrate their experience in reverse engineering of proprietary file systems (i.e. logical vs physical acquisition, methodology varies)."

I can barely get past the file based part. It reads kind of odd.

1. Not all file systems are file based.
2. And because of this we want you to reverse engineer it.

Funny. Maybe this is just one of those statements designed to throw you for a loop.

It is possible that they are talking about a database that stores files. Our shop has an app called digital folders that stores files and collections within SQL. If you would like to come by and practice reverse engineering it, let me know!

They want the candidate to have the ability to modify their in house programs.
I think that's kind of shitty to write something like that on an interview sheet. It is intimidating, overly worded and makes little sense.

Hah I completely agree.
That was the clarification too. Originally it simply said:
"Some experience in the reverse engineering of proprietary file systems."

I asked my supervisor and he had no idea either... I'll try to go by your guys' recommendations and his to come to some sort of response. Thanks! Wont be sending out til Sunday so if anyone else has any ideas I'll keep checking!
