fileserver performance

i've never had a fileserver before, but i realized that my main system is just trying to do too many things on its own (serving files to and from the xbox and tivo, torrents, irc, aim, and gaming sometimes all at once). i'd like to have an extra machine attached to the network that can server up the files to my XBox Media Center and pull them from my tivo.

I have access to a cheap (almost free) P3 450 w/ 384mb of ram (or there abouts), would that be good enough to serve files to? would it be a good idea to invest in gigabit ether net?

The 450 is fine. Get as much RAM as you can and the fastest hard disk you can. You will want to use a PCI add-in card for the disk rather than the mobo PATA ports on a board that old.

If 100 mbps LAN works now, I wouldn't fool with GbE.
 
will the 450 be fine for streaming videos to the xbox... that and mass storage is mainly what i'll be using it for
 
The video stream is disk intensive, so with faster drives, the cpu plays a very little role.

So yes, the 450 is fine, and not as slow in somethings as you might expect.

the gigabit would be for the connection between my main pc and my fileserver... that way, for instance, i could rip dvds on my much faster main pc across the network to the fileserver instead of ripping it to a local hd and then transferring it later
 
Then do gigabit, max throughput on 10/100 is 12.5 MB/s (assuming no overhead associated w/ TCP/IP and that it sucks down all available bandwidth). Realisticly you'll get about 6 or 7MB/s. With gigabit you can get real world speeds of about 60MB/s.

Just make sure your switch supports gigabit as well though.
 
My file server is a P3 650, and it works great for streaming anything. File serving is 95% getting the data off the disk and down the wire, CPU plays a very small role in it.
 
so i went ahead and got the pc...

Micron Millenia P2 400
384 mb of RAM
24x cdrom
80 gig 8mb cache WD hard drive

$30 :)

so i threw all that in an antec plusview case, stuck in an old 400 watt antec psu, added an adaptec IDE controller card, a gigbit NIC, and 4x 250 gig hard drives and it's seems to be working like a charm...

next, i'm off to pickup a gigabit switch... thanks for everyone's help
