I'm looking to depoly a 400GB file server in my house next week and I'm wondering if I'd be better off using Samba/FreeBSD or using a license I have for Windows 2003 and use Windows 2003 file sharing. Out of the two, which would be faster/stable/more secure? Could I do authentication off my LANs Windows 200 active directory box for the Samba server?

I would go with *nix, I find it's faster in general, especially with the control hdparm gives you over DMA, I can get great read and write speeds in Linux.

But I'm also a Linux geek
