File Server question

I think this is the appropriate place.

Outside of the performance hit, Is there any good argument against having virus protection on file servers?

I have always just done it, but am butting heads with a colleague on this. I want to tell him to shut up, but maybe I am missing or not seeing something.

No impact to performance what so ever. A file server is only serving files and not actually running software interfaces.
