What's the best way to back up a ton of data like this?

In an office environment I still prefer tape. And for me at work that is 90+ LTO2 tapes and a 24 slot 2 drive autochanger. This is expensive howerver. $5000 US for the autochanger and $25 for each 200/400 tape.

At home, I only backup a small portion of my data. No need to make backups of 3TB+ of HTPC recordings.
 
OK, so we've decided that we're going to go the hardware RAID 5 route. What are my options in terms of software? Am I limited to Windows Server? Or can I use a free OS?

You can use just any OS as long as it has drivers for your RAID card
 
I'm planning to use either the HighPoint 4320 RAID controller or the Areca 1220 RAID controller. Would something like FreeNAS work? I've begun to look at it a little bit and it seems like it could be pretty promising for what he's going to be using this for
